For those who've considered a TT shifter on their Octavia.

Featured Replies

Just moved a colleagues TT in the car park and thought I'd see how short the shift was compared to the Octavia - any difference is so slight I hardly noticed it.

So if like me, you were thinking of fitting a TT hockey stick to your Octavia to shorten the shift - dont bother.

Diesel Geek is the way to go.

? Is this a place to buy one from?

Do they fit then? Different gearbox.

i would change the actual shifter if i were to change anything

What I would like to know is what are the ratio's on the TT box? Obviously it has an extra cog so are the rest of the ratio's lower down shorter? As it stands I feel that the Octy vRS box is too long legged (105mph in 3rd anyone) and think that Skoda may well have been forced into this as VAG would not want a budget brand rocket @ 15k embarrasing a 25k premium flagship coupe. It is a big commitment to spend £6k to have a TT box fitted so what are the other benefits besides having a 6 speed box????

The front wheeldrive TT shifter fits straight onto an Octavia (People have the on MK4 golfs). the hockey stick is about £18 from a Audi dealer.

The 6 speed box is no longer than the 5 speed. 6th is the same as 5th on the standard box (if you see what I mean) - it is the first 5 that are shorter.

The Diesel geek short shifter is available from the US and you have to fit and tweak it yourself. Many have these on MK4 golfs and are very happy with it IIRC it costs about £119

I wouldn't bother. For £6k I'd trade up for a better car!

They can be had for less than 6k. In a non 4x4 the conversion is a DIY job if your competant/confident. Just need to find a Leon R with the drive shafts, starter motor, clutch etc.....

I would be more confident performing open heart surgery.......On myself than doing something this major on my own. Can an Audi S3 be the donor as my Cousin has one and it is only a matter of time before it will become a donor car :eyepop:.

I was quoting 6k from either the Jabba or Awesome website.

I believe the S3 is 4x4 which would involve some more work and different drive shafts (I believe). Even on an octy 4x4 you'd need a custom prop shaft.

I looked at the conversion when a friend had a 6 speed box going cheap from his converted MK4 golf. In the end I diddnt go for it as the drive shafts were bent.

I remember reading somewhere that you just need to blank off the hole for the rear propshaft & longer/stronger driveshafts. I am assuming that it is the same principle that the Vauxhall boys used to do when they installed the Calibra/Cavalier 2.0 16v Turbo lump & box into Astra's & Nova's!?!

S3 is defo 4x4.......Wonder if you can get the S4 4.2 V8 in an Octy 4x4, convert to rear wheel drive....Should be interesting.

Off the top of my head, you need;

Drive shafts

Starter motor

Clutch

Gearbox

Do a search if you'r einterested, its been covered many times before.

Just dreaming at the minute but I might get 6 numbers on Saturday ;D

waste of time fitting the 6 speed box to the vRS IMO, ok the first 5 ratios on the 6 speed are shorter but 6th of the same as the vRS 5th. Or this is what i've read on here.

i'm a bit puzzled that you think the ratios are too long in the standard 5 speed vRS box... is it not more benificial for spirited driving? i.e. on fast A & B roads you only need 2nd and 3rd...

i'm pretty sure i've read that the 4x4 ratios are shorter than the vRS as well, StuartJ found this when he hit the limiter in top... something that he hasnt managed since having vRS internals slotted in his 4x4 box.

I have always found that shorter ratio boxes are quicker for out right acceleration. If you are going point to point then yes you have to change ratio more often but you are still accelerating quicker between the corners.

For example most Grp A WRC cars top out at 120mph, yet they have 7 speed syncro gearboxes. Why they need maximum acceleration between the twisty bits.

I suppose when it comes down to it the Octy is designed for getting you from A-B on the Autobahn as quickly as possible.

Racing cars often have very narrow powerbands. I'm not convinced of the need for a 6 speed in my car. Certainly re-mapped the torque curve is almost flat.

The vRS is a comfortable motorway cruiser, but the handling is at its best and gives the best results when pushed hard along winding A-roads.

my torque curve isn't flat, far from it infact.

the biggest reason people go for 6 speed boxes is because they are a damn sight stronger than the 5 speed. about 300+ in a 4x4 or 350+ in a FWD and driven hard will blow up the 5 speed boxes easily, ask ffelan.

i wouldn't mind a 6 speed box, infact may well need one in the future :D

The 02M six speed multi shaft gearbox is much stronger and far better engineered than the O2J/R five speed gearboxes.

see, told you so.

my torque curve isn't flat, far from it infact.

Mine is!

If I was going for 350bhp I'd probably have something four wheel drive or at leasr rear wheel drive, so I reckon the 5 speed will do me for now/

will the diesel geek sigma shifter for the golf Gti fit the octy vRS?

and does it reduce shift time?

here's a link to the one i saw on the site:

that one will fit and reduce the required gearstick front-back movement significantly.

Why p*ss about trying audi stuff if you want a shorter shift with better feel and

quicker response buy a damn b&m Quick shift, most tuners or even Halfords can get them. They give about 25/30% better shift feel

These are usually gear levers though, and on the Octy they are a pain in the **** to change (even worse on the 4x4).

I used to fit neuspeed ones on the gearbox, take 15 mins to fit and makes a big difference to the shift stroke.
