Another 1.2 start up rattle thread

Featured Replies

My Yeti with CBZ 1.2 engine has recently developed a start up rattle. Oil and filter change were due anyway so I changed them and noise is still there. Filter was a MANN, and I noticed that no oil leaked from it when I took it off, unlike previous times. Initial replacement filter was also a MANN tightened hand tight as done many times before, rattle continued. Having read these forums, I replaced filter with an original after 100 miles, torqued to 20Nm, far tighter than I would have done it by hand I must say (no oil leaked from MANN when removed). Car is a 2012 so shouldn’t have the problems of earlier models, mileage 70k, same problem with 3 filters now. Anything else I can try? Given the possible consequences I’m inclined to get rid of an otherwise perfectly good yeti if I can’t sort this soon. TIA, Bri

Welcome.

Registered 2012 but when was it built, and the engine built.

Maybe it is the timing chain / tensioner issue, and having that done with a replacement set might mean you can keep your Yeti.

Best check that out with a VW Independent Specialist.

Thanks Offski.

At that kind of cost, car would be an uneconomical repair, ridiculous on a 6 year old car. I am trying to find an independent that is familiar with the problem.

My engine number is CBZB 436xx from Mlada Boleslaw, so looks like way before the new chains came in at engine number CBZ* 462774 (from the TPI I found). Car was built May 2012 I think, so much for just in time manufacture, that's 100's of thousands of engines in stock.

I still don't understand why no oil is retained in filter, that started happening at same time seems too much of a coincidence to me, and chain is silent after initial couple of seconds.

Thanks, Bri

Are you sure the noise is the timing chain and not a hydraulic lifter?
The filter being empty and noise on startup sounds like it could be that.

I would try to find out why the filter is not holding oil, is there a check valve anywhere?
I've had that on cars in the past where the rubber check valve has failed to give symptoms similar to what you have.

One of the filters hasn’t left its rubber seal on the housing has it ?

Urrell, I couldn't say for sure. My old Honda motorbike used to tick all the time when chain was worn, this doesn't. My T25 with hydraulic tappets, ticks and then gradually gets quieter, this doesn't. I believe oil filter contains the non-return valve, which is supposed to keep pressure/ tension on chain. 3 different filters tried now, at hand tight and 20Nm as tightening torque affects oil retention apparently.

Definitely not Parkesie!

VW changed from the Black Oil Filters to the silver ones.

The filters on top of the engines not holding oil is not an issue,  dip your oil cold without the engine started,  see where it is.

Start the engine and stop right away, the 0.5 litres is pumped right away, the oil pump is quick.

There is an issue with people changing the oil and filter and letting drain and the chain tensioners,

see the pinned thread with 1.4 TSI engines in the Fabia Mk2 section.  Links to Lucifers Ultimate guide.

Then there is a thread just today from a new member with a gubbed engine.

Anyway, the rattle, the chain / tensioner and the connection to the Oil Filter is a bit OT.

I used Mhale filters not the Silver OEM ones with 1.4 TSI Twinchargers.  Only benefit the silver ones had was keeping oil in when removed.

I always made a point of putting oil in a new filter before screwing it in place just to help the circulation along

(and a dread of airlocks, even with pump pressure)
