Rear Brake sliders?

Featured Replies

Ok.. So after allot of work on my 1.9tdi estate I'm finally down to the last bits n bobs.....

Been in the hospital the last few days... Wee ones just born :)  ... So asked the garage accross the road to swap the rear O/S calliper to save me the hassle since the handbrake was jammed on.

Anyway calliper swapped and he noticed the handbrake cable was also seized. So I've just asked him to leave it disconnected for now till I get a new one this week.

With the the handbrake cable disconnected... The wheel still doesn't move freely... It moves but ther is still a decent bit of resistance... He advised it might be the rear sliders have seized on the axel/carrier...

Does this sound likely or not? And if so... Any way of sorting it without a brand new rear axel?

i know front sliders are a simple job... Never swapped the rear brakes myself so honestly don't know

any help appreciated cheers

@taylsy01 - Yes you can unseize or change the rear caliper without needing a new axle.

I would have thought so... Thanks... I take it I'll easily be able to identify them ? Any tips removing the sliders?

I'm more than slightly confused why the garage that replaced a rear calliper did not make sure that the sliders were free to move before they fitted the new calliper to the carrier, I'm also surprised that you did not just get them to source and fit a new handbrake cable as you will now be driving your family around in a car that would fail a roadside check.

As you said the garage did not checked the sliders were ok before fitting a rear calliper... There's no way I was paying their expensive labour rates to replace a handbrake cable when they can't fit a calliper propperly... I'll be redoing the brakes myself before we get out of hospital..propperly...

the calliper Is sticking, I would say that's a much bigger issue than a handbrake cable not being connected at 1 end.

I came on here to ask for advise regarding sliders before I start. Thanks for the comment but if you don't have any advise then please keep to yourself.

Dude, you had a baby, congrats!

run4mo, an H&S lecture, seriously?

You'll need a windback tool so you can reset both calipers once you've stripped, cleaned and greased those sliders and you will want to replace the brake pads since wear will be uneven.

Cheers @sepulchrave , aye I've got a winding tool.. Got a feeling it might be twisted right enough from last time I used it on a seized calliper (don't buy a £10 set from eBay lol)

Reckon I'll get away with cleaning them up and using that red grease stuff ?(forgot what it's called but I'm sure I have a wee tub of the right stuff somewhere.)

if if not it's only a tenner or so for new ones so it might be worth ordering new ones before I start.

I don't think so, although that would maybe do the job, not sure...

i think it's a type of rubber grease. Possibly, I'm sure it's the right stuff.
