Kerbed alloy wheel.

Recommended Posts

I've kerbed my front nearside alloy wheel. It's scraped quite badly along part of the edge and looked black where it's damaged.

I've been quoted £97 inc. vat. by a local reputable firm to fix it.

Is this the going rate for a scraped edge does anyone know?

Thanks for that.

My alloys are the normal factory fitted silver ones so should be cheaper?

On my old car I got my 17 inch alloys powder coated and refurbed for about £55 a alloy, I believe I can get a set refurbed and powder coated for about £240.

Mine will be getting refurbed about November in a nice Skoda Green!

Here's the damage. All the black bits are where it's ruined. Quite bad really

Unfortunately that would end up being more expensive as my spare is a 15 inch steel one. Good idea though :)

Wow that's a scrape and a half

I would loose the will to live if I had done that

I was angry at myself to be honest Malcster. I'm normally a careful driver but on this occasion I misjudged a high kerb.

The grinding noise when it happened was dreadful and I new what I'd done immediately. That's life!

I'm guessing £97 is reasonable to fix such a mess.

Hmm, I'd be tempted to bite the bullet and replace with new. Unless things have changed a refurb. entails spray painting the wheel and it is not as resilient as original finish (in as much as you cannot use traditional alloy wheel cleaners - it would strip the paint).

Unless things have changed since I last had refurbishment done.

Just looked on eBay and seen a similar one for £70 off a scrapper.

Does anyone know the part number for my 2016 S EL alloy wheel please?

I'm afraid I did something much worse to a wheel on my wife's previous Polo a 2002 car, touched an exceedingly high kerb while parking and being put under extreme pressure to meet a daughter at the railway station, kerb was at least 9" high, so it was the "sticky out" points near the wheel centre that "got it" - luckily a few months later someone was selling an unused new VW alloy in the VW Driver mag, I grabbed it, damaged wheel moved to spare, steel spare out to storage in garage - which is still sort of handy to have to fit on any car it still fits for moving car in/out of garage etc - or keeping the unused set of winter or summer wheels/tyres up off the floor!

It was surprising how often that damaged alloy ended up back on the car while trying to even out wear on the "main" wheels/tyres.

This link contains the part number for your alloys fella, guessing they are Matones?

I'm thinking that the wheel in the link above only ticks a few boxes, it is a 15" 5 spoke and the OP looks to have 16" 5 spoke alloys.

Thanks for the excellent link Davy.

I've found out mine are actually 'Rock' alloys which are shown on the same page.

£168 at a UK Skoda dealer. £97 at a CZ Skoda dealer.

Could do with finding a good scrap one cheap enough.

Being lucky and checking ebay very frequently is the name of the game, mainly making yourself lucky( how ever we do that?) though!

Edit:- that suggested ebay link one seems to be okay - why did they not show a picture of that wheel's part number?  Crazy people, as the width and offset seemed to indicate that it was Rock.

Now if you do/did buy that one, maybe have a word with your local tyre place to see if they could sell you a serviceable used tyre of the same brand as on your tyre, and fit that one to the marked wheel.  I know that lots of people find it a taboo subject/activity and the law is clamping up on the sell of used tyres, but if you are careful you can buy a good/safe used tyre out there - people change their tyres for many unusual reasons including because they want to match tyres on a car or an axle.

I work next to a tyre place that does alot of part worns, almost all are imported in from countries where the legal limit is alot higher than the 1.6mm in the UK, I've had tyres from them in the past branded (bridgestone, good year etc.) with at least 5-6mm of tread !

Some 4WD cars have systems that are very sensitive to that car having differing effective wheel rolling circumferences and if you get a puncture with 5mm on all the remaining tyres, finding the correct brand of tyre with the same tread depth is an option, the other option being to replace all 4 tyres. My one complaint about most of these places is that they underestimate the remaining tread depth - which is just them playing safe, but in the situation I've mentioned giving a more accurate answer would help.

First used tyres I bought were Michelin ZXs, it looked like someone had tried to pacify their MOT tester by presenting a duff/rusty old car with nice new expensive tyres, so it worked out that that idea failed so the car was driven up onto a pile of loose gravel and the wheels were sold, not easy getting all 4 wheels off a car that has been dumped on top of loose gravel, I got there in the end somehow - bargain for my 1973 reg'd Escort MK1 1300 Deluxe van!

I'm not sure if it is a 'Rock' alloy. It says it's 15 inch rims and my tyres are 16. The part number they advertise doesn't match the 'Rock' either.

I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Any good, use the Kerbed one as full size a spare.

Not the 15" one that a link was given to, but this one, that was given in another posting, maybe an earlier one?

Edit:- statement above was for the OP's benefit.

Sorted!!  Now after it arrives you need to start thinking about finding a suitable tyre for the kerbed one - and a home for the 15" steel spare - or maybe sell that spare as there are some people looking for one from time to time - that is unless you are like me and only buy stuff from ebay!!

Edit:- actually I've missed out the bit about you needing to find a suitable shade of silver paint to disguise the damage on that kerbed wheel!
