Expensive Pads, Cheap Discs or?

Featured Replies

Front brakes squealing over the last week, so quick look and big lip on the discs, so time to replace.

Few questions:

Decent Pads? On cheap as ECP, GSF, TPS do?

Or drop wedge on full set?

Or cheap as from the above?

Also, worth picking up the OE grease, rubber caps etc from TPS?

I went for Mintex M1144s and cheap £35/pair of discs, Comline I think they were. The pads were about £90. I much prefer to spend the money on better pads than fancy discs.

I've tried various combinations of discs and pads an my cars over the years but have come to the conclusion the best set up is decent pads with standard plain discs. If you haven't changed the fluid in a while, it's worth doing as it makes a big difference to the brake performance.

Discs is disc IMHO, steel is steel.

Pads is a different story, I'm a fan of Pagid all round

There are a very large number of different grades of steel.  However, brake discs are made from cast iron; look it up if you don't believe me.

Well either way until you are in carbon ceramic world one doesnt differ much from another and with regards to the way they are cast or the grade it has more to do with how they handle heat not actually their efficiency

Even ignoring "wave discs", the questions of plain or ventilated disc, heat treatment, grooving and cross-drilling all make a difference to disc and pad life, and the prospect of brake fade (not that this should be an issue for a road car).

sadly I know this man ^^^ ;) I have gone to cheapest discs I could find, (changed every time I do the pads, as its so cheap to do) high temp pads, high temp fluid , my brake lines were shot, so I put braided hoses 9HEL) on too :) works very well!
