Engine shakes

Featured Replies

Hi

Ever since I've had my car, I've noticed that the engine shakes for two to three seconds after starting, then it settles down and everything is fine.  There is also a very slight rattling sound at the same time, but that disappears after a few seconds too.  It has always started first time, ticks over nicely, drives fine with plenty of power and fuel economy is good.

Fuel filter has been changed and smoke test on recent MOT was 1.04, 0.1, 0.1 & 0.1. I've used BP ultimate for the last few tankfulls and always start the car with the clutch pedal depressed.  Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I can resolve it.

Many thanks

Paul

Clogged DPF/EGR?

Thanks for your reply.  Could be EGR and fortunately it doesn't have a DPF fitted.

It's a PD engine.

I had the same issue on my old PD170 Octavia, ran the car for years, no change, but no adverse effects either.

It's just how it is, the PD engine, whilst absolutely bullet proof, is older than the hills and is often described as 'agricultural' in terms of refinement.

Chances are the Superb's ability to isolate the driver from the outside world means you probably aren't hearing how bad it actually is :D

Could it not be a sign of glowplugs not working correctly on a PD. I know it's the wrong time of year for this. But they do go wrong and not always together and not always enough to prevent starting. Just a slightly smoky exhaust and shaky idle for a few seconds?

Thank you for all of your replies so far.  As engine misfires for a few seconds after starting whether engine is cold or hot, would this mean that I can rule out glow plugs as the cause?

If not glow plugs then two to three seconds after starting and a rattle sounds like a pressure buildup on starting issue. I'd guess PD unit injector pumps or hydraulic cam followers? Has the engine had the correct oil all it's life?

Service history is a bit patchy, so cannot be 100% sure correct oil has been used before I bought it.  VCDS scan shows no faults, so glowplugs are ok.  The only thing that did show up was injector value on no. 1 was a fair bit different to the other three, but still within tolerance.

Probably one of the glow plugs is down. This will cause shaking on a cold engine.
