Will speeding soon become a thing of the past!

Featured Replies

I read this article recently regarding new "Mandatory" safety features to be installed in cars by 2021. one of the eleven safety features is an ' intelligence speed assistance' "the safety system controls the speed of cars by scanning road signs where possible"

Are they preparing the groundwork for autonomous transport!
because there will be situations where autonomous and non-autonomous cars will share the road in the not too distant near future.       http://www.theweek.co.uk/93687/eu-lists-11-car-safety-systems-to-become-mandatory-from-2021

EU?

Won't be in it by then.

I hope that "intelligent speed assistance" is only assistance and not limiting - there are some situations (not many but they exist) where being able to go briefly over the speed limit in order to avoid an accident is safer than slowing down or stopping (risking the guy behind driving into you).

Airbus initially prevented the A320 from going outside the safe long-term performance parameters until an air accident investigation found that if the pilot had been allowed to briefly (and safely) exceed the limits the accident would have been avoided. This also applies IMHO to road transport where sometimes going briefly outside the limits is the safer option.

Goods vehicles already have Speed Limiters, and if the UK Government want to implement UK Registered vehicles requiring Speed Limiters fitted from manufacture then the Manufacturers of vehicles in the UK or those importing them will need to do that.   Not complicated really.

I thought that the technology to prevent cars from exceeding the speed limit of the road they are on had existed for 20+ years.  And that exceeding the speed limit was facilitated purely so that numpties like me can enjoy contributing further financially to the wealth of this great Queendom of ours :wondering:

It'll be fun making faux speed limit signs and watching them grind to a (near) halt ?

There used to be pranksters that were at a fixed speed camera on the A90 at night and set off two flashes from a camera or something at cars under the speed limit.  It was amusing seeing cars slam on brakes, but obviously dangerous.

Admit it, you only stopped doing that due to it costing you a fortune to recharge the camera batteries.

First time it happened to me i posted about it on here, then watched for it happening to others near North Water Bridge at night and i managed to see the couple of young lads that were doing it.  I travel the road regularly enough to have seen it happen a few times about 4 years back.  (Edit maybe 3 years)

I wonder what will be the point of buying a 2021 Audi R8 or a Tesla model X/S with 'Ludicrous' mode will be from that date on! Unless they're for the track.

No point buying them now other than wanting them or you are tracking them or taking abroad.

The British Insurers have never made 'Black Boxes mandatory' but the UK Government can after BREXIT, so GPS Tachographs on all motorised vehicles.

They can do speeding fines and road mileage charging, as well as congestion / low emission zone charging.

They always shied away from it because so many voters are motorists and they are scared of losing votes and being kicked out at the next election - I don't see that changing even with the move to "greener" vehicles there will still most likely be 20+ million motorists who could be alienated.

Do you mean the Conservative & Unionists might alienated those that vote in General Elections?

Hardly think that will worry them too much as all their coats are on a shoogly peg.  It might be their last hoorah.

Their main support in the older age group might just be in full support of reducing speeds and making 'Sunday Driving' a 7 day a week thing.

hang on .just because I am old doesn't mean I don't like a turn of speed.

Are you an old Tory?

Excuse me - I'm in the "older age group" but don't vote Tory and LOVE "making good progress" when driving (which is an art I enjoy).

Lots of us older age group drivers here that like to make progress.

That was below the belt / sporran!

Also old, but if I want fun on Her Maj's Highway I use my bike  ( & close my mouth to keep the flies out.

I am used to swallowing flies, insects etc, but last week at speed got one up my nose and that was the worst experience ever.

I bit hot right now for a buff over mouth and nose but that is just what is getting worn this morning.

So?

There's nothing stopping any government from seeing a law in one country and nicking it for their own.

That's what they were trying when they came up with the idea of speeding fines being valued according to the means of the offender, based on their tax returns and lifted from Norwegian laws IIRC...

Nor anything stopping them from doing something different?

Depends if they can make money off it, I expect.

Plenty of laws the UK has adopted/adapted, despite not being required to...
