Clutch release bearing noisy (Skoda fabia 2008)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Every morning when I switch the engine on I can hear a rattling noise, when I press the clutch pedal down to the floor the noise disappear.

I believe it's the clutch release bearings are faulty.

Does it mean that the entire clutch need to be renewed or just the bearings and how much much will it cost to fix ???

I would love to hear and take your advices on this.

Kind regards,

Sam,

You have to separate the gearbox from the engine to remove and replace the release bearing. It might be worth changing the clutch at the same time to save costs of having to split them again in the future.

Cheers,Thankyou.

Does the rattle disappear if you raise the revs slightly, too?  Wait until it rattles and raise the revs just a little at a time. See if the sound stays or goes away.

As mentioned above, its a pig just to do this. Might be better living with the issue until the clutch is worn and change the lot as they will fit a new bearing along with the clutch kit.

If It's the clutch release bearing then the noise would happen when you push the clutch pedal down not when the clutch pedal is up.

Yes exactly if I raise the revs the rattling disappear or depress the clutch pedal.

How long do you thing for the clutch to follow suit with the bearings releaser,as I am taking the kids to France I wonder if it will last for a while until I come back??

Mines been doing it for about a year! Irritating but I won't replace just the bearing. I should have done it prior to the clutch warranty expiring. That said, If they knew I was a driving instructor, the warranty is only one year, as opposed to two, on a replacement clutch at Mr Clutch. Therefor, it would have expired a lot sooner.

Incorrect. The noise will happen when the clutch is released and the bearing has no side load. When you push the pedal down, side load is applied and the noise stops. The bearing is dry (lost grease) and/or ball races worn, so loose axially.

Well on the cars i've had with a worn release bearing it's been when you put the clutch down

Why would the noise stop when you put load onto a worn bearing ?

That link contradicts what you are saying and confirms what DC2990 said above

'A bearing noise that occurs when releasing the clutch pedal to engage the clutch while in neutral, but goes away when the pedal is depressed is caused by a bad transmission input shaft bearing.'

Ok, I accept and retract my previous comments. SKF should know. Learn something new every day.....

It's getting to technical for me.

Is the rattling noise coming from my release bearings then??

Probably not, just the gearbox input shaft is a bit loose/slack/worn bearings - or has otherwise become intolerant of that slow idle speed - maybe!

Last post from me on the subject.

Looking into it it could well be the release bearing,so i was wrong to suggest that you couldn't have noise from the release bearing with the clutch up.

At the time when i posted i was just going from my own 2 cases.

If nothing else at least it has shown to sam91 that it could be something else and not automatically be the release bearing.

Hey, you could be right there are always exceptions and surprises with every fault, even when you think its straight forward.

I think it would be an easy diagnosis for anybody with some mechanical experience, you would be able to hear that tell tale whirr from the gearbox come in and out as you released the clutch.

Can you record the noise to give us a better guess?

I will do my best.

If the fault lies with parts that are changed with the clutch kit, expect about £360-£400 from a clutch place and around £600 from a main dealer.

Ok so I am currently having this same problem. Does anyone know what the issue eventually turned out to be?

Skoda fabia 1.4 tdi pd engine. 2008. Currently at 222k miles.

I have a rattle at ideal. Raise the revs and it goes, press the clutch in and its gone. If the engine is kept at around 1000 revs no sound at all. Drives fine.

I have uploaded a video.
https://youtu.be/Z4CMXIXudgA

I did get cheated when I bought the car as I realised it was there only after it got home. Anyways thts a different story.

Its been around 12 k miles now since I bought it. I think it has got a little worse as first there were some instances where it would stop comming if I pressed the clutch n left it. But tht does not seam to work now. As soon as the rpms go down to around 800 it starts rattling.

I have changed the gearbox oil, tried adding some additives in the box but no difference.

Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think it's probably the clutch plate cush springs rattling, it's really not worth worrying about unless you're determined to replace the clutch at that mileage.

Personally I wouldn't bother, I'd live with it.

I think its just the same issue I had.... Wait until the clutch needs replacing and it should go away. You could ask a clutch specialist if they recognise the sound... They may drive around the block and give an opinion. Or invest in a new clutch anyway but I would at least wait until it starts slipping under load.
