Another what TV thread (sorry)

Featured Replies

Our current TV is approx 12years old and is a 37" Samsung 720p.

It still works but the picture has degraded over the years.  We're not huge fans of recreating a cinema feel at home and all dvd's (no bluerays) are boxed but backed up onto a NAS and streamed via a media pc, currently it is connected via VGA but is capable of HDMI (our current TV was pre HDMI).

We do stream Amazon Prime & the only sports watched is Cycling & Horse racing.

We have a Cambridge Audio AV unit for sound (doesn't support HDMI) so will also need to be changed & will eventually be the main switching unit for the Media PC & Xbox.

We saw this JVC TV today https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/televisions/televisions/jvc-lt-43c870-43-smart-4k-ultra-hd-led-tv-10167271-pdt.html and for the price looks to be unbeatable value, I also get an extra 10% off through my employer.

My first thought is that you're not going to benefit from 4k with a TV less than 55".

The second thought is look at the TV before buying as cheap isn't always the best criteria to go on.

I should have said. We have seen the TV and the picture looks a lot better than the TV we currently have (that isn't difficult though).  The build/finish of the TV looks on par with other TV's there.

My thoughts are, 'if' it last 3 years it will have done well and any longer will be a bonus.

I believe JVC is now something of a zombie brand.

They do not build their own European or North American Market TVs but put their labels on "Brand X " they buy in.

Check AVForums.com for expert advice/reviews.

Update:

Contributors on AVForums post that JVC TV's are actually made by Vestel - a Turkish factory that make BUSH Grundig FInlux Hitachi and many other cheapo zombie brands, and Supermarket own brands too.

The real downside of the Vestel TVs is that repair shops wont touch them. My last one (BUSH) broke down after 23 months and went in the bin since no-one could get parts for it. OK, we have another (Sainsburys) one in the guest room, but it doesn't get used much.

Spend a bit more on a real major brand, Panasonic, Sony, LG, Samsung, Philips.

Oh and watch out for "bottom of the range" TV's from premium brands that are actually Vestel cheapies too - Toshiba do this.

  • 2 weeks later...

You'll potentially get an extra year warranty for nothing extra if you buy from John Lewis.
