Anybody else suffering morning brakes?

Featured Replies

obviously the brakes kinda rust over or they go that tinge of brown every night.. but ive noticed especially as its cold at the moment that the brakes need cleaning ie just drive along and gently use the brakes. yesterday took it to a whole new level.... pressed the pedal about 2 inches and nothing was there.... i had to do the cleaning procedure about 10 times.. obviously i know brakes work better when theyve warmed up but i dont expect to struggle to stop from 30 mph.. anybody else suffer this and apart from changing the discs and pads is there a cure...i drove ma dad courtesy car (golf 2.0 tdi) and there was none of this morning brake sickness...infact the golfs brakes ingeneral were very very sharp.

--cheers for any suggestions

ho:thumbup:

It will be all the salt and carp the council put on the roads, drying on your discs and pads at night, and stopping your stoppers stopping !

then the golf would have suffered the same??but it didnt......

This might sound daft, but does the golf travel on the same roads ? or through different council areas with different grit piles ? I seem to remember another thread that says some councils use grit with other stuff added because its cheaper ?

Or am i being a numpty ?

Could you hose your wheels down every night, to remove grit and/or crap, or am I being a numpty again?

My fab suffers hurrendous morning brake syndrome. When cold they are complete crap. My fix at the minute (312s going on next week hopefully) is to just slam the anchors on. that seems to warm them up nicely and then they behave themselves.

i work for me dad so yeh we defo travel along the same roads...... i dont think the neighbours would be to happy if i started hosing ma wheels every night ie i dont get home from work till about 12-1 midnight.......ill give'em a splash of water tonight see if it helps.....just asked me bro and he seems to suffer the same thing.... he reckons it gets worse the more u dont drive it... ie left it stood for 3 days and his brakes were near enough non existent......a worrying thing if your going on holiday for a week

Oddly though on every car I've had the brakes have been a lot more bitey with a layer of rust on as the uneven disc surface produces a higher friction. Sure it's not just a case of the pads being cold and requiring warming up first?

My brakes get really rusty overnight and are not that effective first thing so i drive slowly down the road with the brakes partially on and that seems to do the trick

I live on a cul de sac and one morning I went down the raod to turn around and nearly flung myself through the windscreen stopping from 5 mph. The brakes do seem to be very "bity" in a morning. so it can't be because they are cold. i'd go with the water at night just as a test to see if it is better.

Generally brakes are more affective when they are colder on road cars???

heat on brakes increases fade?

The loose crud stops a good contact between pad & disc, and causes the annoying scraping noises.

My brakes do it, it's one of those things. There are plenty of places I need to stop, tend to drive off and slow down gently to grind it off, then brake hard(er) to come to a full stop (dodgy T-junction, not generally possible to keep going). Seems to sort it most of the time.

Post-cleaning the car seems to really bring out this effect too (i.e. cause it to grind). It does happen on other cars too

should always give your brakes a little warm up in the morning for ths reason, just to deglaze the padsget the crap off the brake discs.

well ive tried a few things to stop the "morning brake sickness" of the car ie

(1) bucket of water on them b4 i sleep

(2)heavy braking as i pull in to drive to give them a final scrub of the pads

(3)not using the handbrake on my drive and leaving it in 1st gear

and tbh (3) works the best... i dunno why but i felt more braking power on the initial press. the weathers been about the same as it has over the past 3 weeks infact its gotten worse so give number (3) a try

also see attatched pic of morning brakes every morning and see if yours is this bad

I park my car overnight on a very steep hill and believe me, I've had a few scares as the breaks have failed to respond as expected when i get to the bottom.

dont know about crap on the discs, theres nearly crap in my boxers:rofl:

If your discs are hot, it is NOT a good idea to throw cold water on them. The outside surface will be cooled much more than the inner one, which can lead to serious disc warpage. I never wash my car directly after any hard driving for this reason. I've also been told to not use the handbrake on trackdays (when parked) for the same fear of disc damage.

Another thing, but throwing water all over the brakes before night time seems a little foolish too? I wouldn't have thought that a braking system incased in ice is particularly effective?

Not only that it makes sure they WILL rust up overnight...

When I clean my wheels on a weekend then leave overnight after hosing, looks just like the pic - orange surface rust all over.

Take the car out to warm the discs and get them dry before parking up and in the morning they're still bright & shiny.

Don't put them to bed cold and wet - same like for your kids!!:)

I get the faint 7-8k miles brake squeak now and again (sounds like a faint beep sometimes) but after a few "Italian deglazes" usually stops. A good blast with a hose and then a run to dry out seems to work best. I guess in the summer it might be worth a good brake strip and clean all round.

No problem otherwise - less hassle than paying your gas bill really!:)

welll the bucket of water b4 i went to bed was a suggestion by another member..... only tried it the once and it didnt work... u see the thing with that picture was it happends every night regardless of me wetting or doing owt else.....only car's brakes i know that do this tbh

I was parked in a Hotel Car Park on the sea front in Poole once in February for a week, come to the Friday and the brakes had rusted together car wouldn't move. Took some WD40 before I could get any movement out of them to snap off, brakes were then well dodgy till the WD40 have worn off.

This was on a Mondeo Company Car BTW.

Must have been the Quay Thistle??

Lots of salt spray round there, as well as a few of us carrot crunchers hosing the discs after closing one suspects!!:) More pubs than salt spray.:)
