What would you change to?

Featured Replies

I've got the same motor, albeit a 65-plate.

Unlike you I'm keeping mine for a few more years, still love driving it. When I eventually do get rid, around the 80k mark (its just hit 35k) i'll be in the market for a fast petrol, something of the 140i ilk but with AWD.

What's the reason for the change?

They lied to me about the handling and fuel economy for one, then they said the car would have adjustable headlights for driving abroad (No they don't), heated windscreen (No), DAB (No).

Or Chiron, might as well go all out if it's not going to meet OP's requirements.

Give it another year. They'll be about £15K by then, because Alfa's... :D

Bugatti Chiron - when I win the Lottery B)

Our Octavia mk3 1.4tsi is now four years old, low mileage (45k km), one careful owner, brand new tyres, annual dealer servicing, excellent condition and garaged overnight. Despite its condition it would not get much on trade in.

Don't need a bigger car but cannot move to a smaller car due to providing regular transport for elderly parents.

It is more economical on a longer run cruising at our speed limits than our very compact second car, a 2003 1.3 Toyota Echo/Yaris (which itself still matches its official economy figures) .

Since I have no problem overtaking others on the open road in the Yaris (0-100kph in 13 secs) the 1.4tsi  power (0-100 in 8.5 secs) is more than adequate for all our road conditions, even when fully loaded... and jeez you can cram a lot in.

I looked at Kodiaq and Superb and while really lovely cars they are far too big for our needs and are not available in Australia in the 1.4tsi engine sizes I'd be interested in. Rapid and Fabia are just a bit too small for fitting the elderly people in as they don't bend to well.

Other German brands are too expensive, Korean and Japanese alternatives don't really offer anything more than we already have and often have less.

We might do the Australian 'grey nomad' thing one day and go around the continent for a year but that will require an entirely different vehicle, but until then we will stick with our 'Goldilocks / just right' car.

My local taxi driver is very pleased with his Hyundai i40 estate its a diesel auto. He had a Merc before that and it was costing him a lot to keep it going

I wouldn't touch a Mercedes with a barge pole. Heard so many horror stories about high repair bills.

Probably a Stelvio 280 next for me.

I was seriously considering a used C300h estate since I had a ride in a friends, it was amazingly smooth and refined. But when I looked online at how complex the powertrain is on those things I was put off. IT would be a lot of money if any of those many shiny moving bits went wrong.

I've just replaced my second car, I was looking for ages in that sort of price range, and I REALLY wanted a Jag XE R Sport 2.0i. Bloody lovely car to sit in, to drive, etc. Some of the interior isn't up to BMW/Audi standards, and the ICE is a bit last generation, but i'd have taken one in a heart beat. In the end I struggled to find one in the right spec, where the dealer wasn't asking silly money.

16k doesn't actually get you anything low mileage and fun from the Germans. Its either high mileage or low spec. I looked at loads, then gave up and brought another Octavia vRS, so now we have matching his n hers Octavia VRS's (albeit a hatch and an estate in different colours)

There are some bloody good bargains on Seat Leon's (due to the appauling resale values), if you don't need the space of an Octavia, just a shame very few of them were auto, otherwise I might have gone that route.

$160,000 every 15k miles in tyre costs and an extra $20,000 if you have a puncture.

Needs to be a big win :)

And you will need a disabled person sticker for it so you can freely park in their extra wide parking spaces at the supermarket :)

What about the new insignia, you can get some pretty good second hand deals for these (test drove it before the Occy) and its a surprisingly good value for money.

The brief is very vague and takes you from something like a Dacia Logan

The though of that car sends a chill down my spine - last time I looked inside one it was like they had been through Renaults spares bin :D

Does a Passat have a hatchback nowadays? I bought a new Passat estate many years ago because it was that or a saloon at the time. Lovely car. I see my current Octavia combi as a cheaper Passat estate.

Here are a few to avoid. Notably, Jaguar Land Rover are quite clearly not to be relied upon!

Nissan and Merc don’t do too well either!!

Won’t be buying a Volvo or a Tesla anytime soon either!

I wouldn't do a Jag, I sat in an XF not so long back and was appalled at the quality of the materials. Urgh.

I could see myself driving a Kodiaq, though if things were to move to doing serious mileage, I'd probably just go for a Superb for the better economy.

The new V60 is lovely. It's also about €50k here, though, a chunk more than the €44k for a vRS 4x4 (those numbers might be wrong, it's what I have in my head). Alternatives with 4x4 are rare, though the wife likes the look of the Insignia Country Tourer - I just don't know that I could survive the Opel logic.

I'd also look at an Optima SW and an i40, but I figure that the numbers on those are prohibitive, depending on budget. I fully expect that I'll be wanting 4x4 if I'm driving 30-40k kms per year, with at least half of that in snow.

This looks good (to me ) - particularly the GT SW with 245BHP, expected list price for that one around £31k (fully loaded) - will certainly test drive one when it hits show rooms later this Quarter

Booked a taxi for the airport run a few years ago and remember the driver struggling to fit 2 large suitcases into the boot of a VW Passat saloon. Don't know why he didn't buy the estate, much more practical.

Good at 3 years old because they lose 66% of their new value!
