What would you change to?

Featured Replies

As the owner of an Octavia 3 vrs tdi I have been pretty happy with this car and having owned it for nearly 2 years had very little trouble apart from a sticky clutch pedal now and then. However I am thinking of changing but just cant decide and to be honest nothing is really jumping out at me. So i would like to ask the owners on here what would you go for  if you were thinking of changing your car? My budget is £16k max.

They lied to me about the handling and fuel economy for one, then they said the car would have adjustable headlights for driving abroad (No they don't), heated windscreen (No), DAB (No).

Any particular requirements? Age, mileage, number of doors, fuel economy etc.

If you can't think of any reason to change, then why change?

I've had mine nearly 2 years now and I honestly can't think of anything I'd replace it for that isn't significantly more expensive I.e. >£20k.

Would like 2015 onwards. Must be a decent size family car.

If you are happy with it stay with it, although you have to consider more and more depreciation as time goes by.  I kept an old Mercedes that I had from new for 25 years and did over 300,00 miles with no huge problems that weren't foreseen and could be dealt with.  I still wish I'd kept it as it will soon be creeping into the classic area.

Difficult to suggest a model for someone else, you have to look around and balance between what your heart likes and what your head thinks is practical.  Personally, over the years I've had great fun with 1930s  Austins to Mk 2 Jaguar, Toyota GT86 to my present Mk 3 Octavia.  Along the way I threw in a Reliant Kitten and a Ford Prefect all great fun in their own way:D

The brief is very vague and takes you from something like a Dacia Logan to an Audi A6. Do you want something ‘premium’ (inverted commas intended) or will something like a Seat or something French be something of consideration? If you don’t want something French or Japanese and Mondeos/Insignias are too dull (they are not cars to spend your own money on IMO, they are sound fleet cars) you will probably looking at a Leon or another Octy unless you can step to over £20k to the next class of car and then you could have an XF/A6/5/E Class. The Volvo V60 was high on my list when buying my Octy as a former Volvo owner myself but I felt the Octy is much better vfm and it’s more engaging to drive in vRS flavour whereas R-Design Volvo’s just have the looks, they are the same as the standard ones underneath. You could have an A4/3/C Class but the new C Class has a lot of Renault influence and the BMW 3 is a much smaller car inside that the Octy. If nothing is jumping out, why change? I looked extensively and I concluded the Octy is great balance of quality, space and value :)

Makes no sense to change if you like what you have and can't think of anything else you prefer.

I'd happily have another Octavia, but will almost certainly wait for the Mk4.

This looks good (to me ) - particularly the GT SW with 245BHP, expected list price for that one around £31k (fully loaded) - will certainly test drive one when it hits show rooms later this Quarter

Kia is crap. The quality of them is questionable with issues regarding wheel delamination seats splitting and sat nav/infotainment system problems.

Best left alone. But something decent like a Mercedes or Audi, even a Jaguar.

Well that's the thing. One one hand I hear a lot of people agree with you but on the other, people saying the opposite, that they have improved massively over the last 10 years , so much so that they are almost touching premium quality now. There is only one way to find out I suppose.

Beware of the sales team they are as slippery as anything and sell snake oil. Definitely not to be trusted.

Please elaborate if you care. Would be good to have the info in my arsenal

Loads of little things, which added up to a lot of other things and I was told that the gearbox was a dual shift one, when it wasn't, it was a old fashioned torque converter (slush) one.

It also had a serious fuel issue with it drinking a £150-160 of fuel a month even with a light foot.

thanks. i understand now

Korean brands (Kia, Hyundai & Genesis are effectively the same company) are on the up.

I tend to agree with this. Myself I didnt even look or consider any of the Koreans (as they really were ****e) but now they are catching my eye and the more I research then more I see that we might have just been hypnotised to believe that everything form Germany or Japan is great.

Just look at Skoda a few years ago and where they are now, rubbing shoulders with the big boys and collecting all the awards.

Tony, hence my recent thread, “Is Kia the new Skoda?”

Superb all day long. The hatch on the Superb is so much more practical and has more rear leg room than the Passat. I would almost compare the passat with the Octavia size wise.

Depends if you need the extra space, Passat is a nice place to be, big step up from the Octavia in refinement.

I've had a B6 and B7, fits in my Garage. Superb's too long. :)
