Steel wheels

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a mk3 superb sportline 2.0tsi 220 and i have a 16inch spare wheel in the boot.  What i want to know is can i get 4 more of these steel wheels and put winter tyres on?  Dealer seemed to tell me it was temporary...  Its not a skinny one with max speed sticker on.

Thanks in advance

Adrian

Brake calliper/disc clearance is the biggest consideration. Everything over 150ps up to and including 220ps get 312mm at the front (vented) and 300mm at the rear (solid).

These are the same size as the discs on my previous car and that *just* took 16” wheels for Winter.  No issues.

Something like these should fit:

Just out of interest, does the 150tdi get 288 or 312 and if the first is a carrier only and disk upgrade still possible?

Thanks for info penguin. I guess if its safe to use the steelies same size as the one in the boot over winter i could get a set of 4 with winter tyres on?

I *think* 288mm for 150ps and below.

I think so yes, based on the brake disc/rotor sizes, though the brake carrier may be another factor to consider.

If nobody can 100% confirm on here then maybe ask in the Octavia forum as I’m sure the petrol vRS is more common than the 220 TSI Superb

I prob need to find time to fit the spare onto the car to see how it is.  Im assuming if its an option with the car it will fit lol.

Agreed. Otherwise the spare would be 17”, or so logic would dictate.

As much as I know, the spare wheel is smaller in diameter than regular Superb wheels. So yes, you could drive around with full set of same size wheels but your spido would not be correct anymore.

The wheel may be smaller but tyre profile will be bigger, giving the same effective diameter.

Yeah thats what i was thinking as the profile of the tyre is much bigger. I guess ill see how it looks on compared to thr 19s and even measure the 16" and compare to 19s with tgr low profiles

Actually nope.

Spare wheel for Superb is 205/55 R16 and standard tyre is 215/55 R17. It means 5,3% smaller diameter and tyre height 24,9" compared to standard tyre's 26,3".

When you put on your spare wheel then I believe several things like tyre pressure monitor and ACC will stop to work because one tyre is smaller than other three.

And in some EU contries you are not allowed to drive with any other tyre size than factory ones meaning that 205/55 R16 would not qualify. Dunno how it is in UK though:)

^^^ But when you put on the spare wheel you reset the TPMS, and drive on with care and slower. (when the tyre repaired or replaced & back on reset the TPMS again.)

And if you have Haldex you go as short a a distance as you can to a place of safety if you are running odd sized tyres on the same axle.

replaced stock 205/55r16 by full diameter 205/65r16
weren't easy put it in cause back side plastic

diameter comparison to 215/55r17 and 225/55r17:
205/55r16 _ -5.3% _ -6.7%, this huge size difference cancels usage of cruise control
205/65r16 _ +0.8% _ -0.7%, not tested yet

Hmm my wheels on the car are 19s as its a sportline

All standard Superb tyres have more or less same diameter. For example 235/45 R18 is exactly the same as 215/55 R17.

235/40 R19 is 0,1" higher than 215/55 R17.

Narrower tyres are better in snow and they cost much less so why not get a set of 215/55 R17 winter tyres and steel rims?

Yeah 17s would work too just wanted smaller than the 19s i have on as standard

Take Superb Combi 4x4 2.0TDI for example. That one has MK3 option.

Thx i selected the 2.0tsi 280 4x4 option as that gave one variation lol.

Does this look right? Offsets and all that (i have no idea what all those numbers mean lol)  Want to make sure before i order later in the year.  As mentioned above will this effect speedo?

It seems about right. No steel wheel option on 17"?

My main concerne is that 215/60 R16 is not an official size for Superb (it is almost same diameter as R17 though). I don't know how strict they are in UK. 16" should fit though because spare wheel is also steel 16".

Think i will sack idea of 16s and get 17inch alloys. Prob a safer bet

Ahhh, forgot to comment on speedo.

No, there is no significant effect on spido. And offsets seem right.

I would personally go with 17" alloys. Tyres would not cost much more and you can get alloys near to steel wheel price.
