Engine warning light..... D'oh!

Featured Replies

How embarrassing.

I checked my oil a few weeks ago and it needed a top up.

No problem, I put 500ml in, checked the dipstick and off I went.

A few days later, my EML illuminated. No symptoms other than an occasional fluctuating idle.

Rang the garage, they told me to bring it down and they would plug it into their computer, still under warranty.

After having the car from 9am to 4.30pm I received a phone call that my car was ready to pick up.

The 'fault' - oil filler cap not properly seated. This causes a pressure drop in the engine and registers as a fault.

In my defence, it was dark when I filled it up :notme:

Good on you for confessing to this. Could help others. :)

Here to help!

I bet the techie who discovered the loose cap had urine stains down the front of his overalls and a sore throat, from all that laughter!

We've all done something like it. I did an oil change on my Alfa 164 and 'thought' I had tightened the new oil filter up enough. I hadn't, it was just a tight spot on the thread. Anyway the new oil went into the sump OK. Within three seconds of starting the car it was back out again all over my drive......very embarrassing indeed and it took an awful lot of sand and newspaper to clear up.  There was no long term damage except to my ego.

Don’t ever become a counsellor will you...

Driving instructor, actually and, yes, Ive made the occasional blunder. Putting petrol in my diesel is one I am happy to admit to. A tankful of wasted fuel, two hour wait and a few hundred quid worse off! Ouch!
