Canton ... or not?

Featured Replies

Hi,

thank you all for the additional info on the Canton speakers and how they sound. Does any one has any specs on the stereo? I'm mainly interested in the DAC used for playing music and the Bluetooth version it's equipped with.

Thank you in advance for your response.

  • Wow. I barely understood a word of that!!

  • I'm not keen on grime but fortunately we've got a good hand job car wash nearby oo err.

  • So I’ve been playing around with my standard setup with Amundsen head unit. I’m actually very pleased with the standard sound. I set bass to +7 mid +2 treble +4 and get a very punchy natural sound out

I tried the Kodiaq with and without Canton today. Granted it’s  not a Karoq, as I’m  interested in the Kodiaq.

I tested with my farvorite songs using Cayplay, no Bluetooth but with cable.

Canton version:

Firstly I was suprised to learn that it still only has 8 (well 10, but let me finish) speakers, and the top front side grill with the Canton logo, wasn’t as speaker but just for show, unlike in the Superb version. So the only added speakers are the center one, and the Subwoofer. The volume can be very high in the Canton version, even to high for comfort. The bass using subwoofer was very punchy, which was fun, but not anything I would use on a daily basis. I needed to set my own equalizer settings, but the Rock setting was the one that came closest for best audio using standard settings. But you can easily make a better user defined setting than the standard presets.

Standard version:

The sound was awful (not great at least) at first, that is untill I fiddled with the equalizer. The standard setting has to much emphasis on the middlerange, to little treble and bass. The sound in the back could be a bit higher, and one tends to hear sound from the front and not only from backseat. This creates a wrong sound experience when seated in the back. This can however be remedied using sound fading, and slide more sound to the back. This however lowers the capable total max volume, as the back speakers are lower on watts (as they also are on Cantons... hhmmm... one wonders)

Conclusion:

The Canton version do sound better, but I’m not spending my money on this. This is simply because they don’t sound that much better. The Canton Subwoofer is awesome, but nothing I would use enough. This is cause of the bass you get in the non Canton version which is surprisingly punchy. To justify spending money on Canton I would need to use the subwoofer on a high level, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense. The standard speakers aren’t that much different from the Cantons, that is, unless you want really loud and clear volume. Skoda has done it smart with the standard speaker setup, you can’t turn the volume up further than it can handle, so no distortion.

My money is going to the Area View instead. To little sound different to justify the extra bucks on the Cantons.
