Do Skodas suffer with the same issues that VW's have, bring part of the VAG group after all?

It's just you know how apparently everyone wants a VW and how the motoring press go crazy for VeeDubs, but if you look up their reliability and issues, they have a list of faults and problems as long as your arm!!?

while VW, Audi and Skoda share quite a number of components, its how the car is assembled that makes the difference.

yes, vw use some better quality bits, and audi use some premium quality bits.

however the Czech workers at the Skoda factories put the cars together with better TLC (tender loving care), than the German counter-parts!  so i hear.

hence Skoda always scoring better in terms of reliability and owner satisfaction, despite using the same, or less quality bits.

likewise can b said when comparing to Skodas assembled in China and India - much poorer build quality.  again, same components, but not put together as well.

It is also to do with the fact that skoda doesnt use the new tech straight away.  When i was with the VAG brand down at Milton Keynes head office i was told that skoda wont use the newer tech till faults are ironed out.  Example is the electronic handbrake. VW been suing since around 2005/2006 on the 3C passat. We had soooo many towed in or brought in with faults with switch/ecu sometimes the motors.  So when audi get all new tech 1st usually followed by VW, we had to file a report for 1st 6-12 months on all new models where there is a warranty claim on a component.  Manufacturer can then see what is most common and go back to the manufacturer of the component and either use the 2nd ot 3rd supplier till fault is sorted.   So in a way yes as customers we dont get stuff like virtual cockpit as early as other brands but at least faults are less (generally)

Hi Adrian.

Thanks for that, that's very interesting!

Its more VAG board policy doesn't allow Skoda to compete with latest Audi or VW models so Skoda will always only get the 1/2/3 year old parts bins. Audi gets first pick, then VW, then SEAT and Skoda is last in the queue. The benefit is of course often (but not always or automatically) better or sorted quality.

What they don't realise though is that they are in fact competing with themselves. A superb L&K for £32k ish has more standard kit than an A6...configure an A6 with the same equipment is almost double the price. Audi has second to none build quality that's a fact, but when it comes to cost most people are happy to sacrifice a bit of that for more equipment. That's why I reckon Skoda and Kia and some other brands are doing so well. My friend has a new Kia Stinger GTS, what a fantastic car that is :o

Except new car sales have for a long time been driven strongly  by brand image and status, perceived quality is often no more than just a marketing theme.

We would all be driving old Toyota's if it was down to reliability and "quality" (whatever that means).

Many people would still not be seen dead in a Skoda, that is very very slowly changing.

And PCP and leasing have a way to make those Audis seem cheap.

Skoda iirc is the most profitable brand in the VAG group by a long way. That probably leaves the VAG board a dilemma as the German unions are complaining about Skoda.

Yes fully aware of that. I used the electronic handbrake as an example as thats tech that has been out for over 10yrs on vw/audi but skoda only implemented on mk3 superb i believe.  Due to the sheer number of faults we used to see at vw across the range.

Porsche is said by VW Group to be the most profitable brand then Audi when talking passenger cars.

EDIT,

sorry, who knows as they spin it every way.  They probably are happy showing less profit where they are looking to pay less tax...

Looks like they are bigging up Skoda to 'sell' in the USA the Electric Cars Skoda do not yet manufacture.

Maybe Audi are dropping down the table.

But I’ve had some annoying experiences too:

- A tailgate that opens by mistake if I have the remote in the pocket, usually happens if I have my youngest kid on my lap. I don’t get why the range for opening it is like 30 meters, I can probably be at the back of my house and open the tailgate at the front. It’s honestly an annoying function unless you never have the keys in your pocket.

- Automatic Start/Stop function that I simply don’t like, seems like it’ll drain the battery and kill the starting engine faster than it would without it. I’m about to deactivate it through OBD2 though.

- Opening the tailgate with the foot works in maybe 2 out of 5 ”kicks”.

- adBlue check is misbehaving, pops up now and then and says I can drive 1000km and says after that it won’t start, it has said that for 3 weeks now. Warranty fix.

- Kessy start and stop works in 1 out of 3 button presses. Warranty fix.

- scroll wheel on the steering wheel is unresponsive. Warranty fix.

- 3 years old and the brake discs are quite corroded. Not what I’m used to.

- tow bar is stuck, fortunately in the out position.

I might have bad luck though so don’t read too much into this. And I still love the car. Can’t see myself having anything else tbh, I’ll probably just go from Superb to Superb from now on. That’s an okay review score I’d say ;)

Quoting myself just to verify that I’ve got some things fixed, either through warranty or through Carista OBD plug/app.

- A tailgate that opens by mistake if I have the remote in the pocket, usually happens if I have my youngest kid on my lap.

Fixed with Carista! Deactivated the open trunk function on the remote.

Deactivated with Carista!

My fault... Apparently you cancel the operation if you kick a second time too soon. Now that I know it’s a delay before the tailgate opens it now opens every time 100%!

Kessy start and stop works in 1 out of 3 button presses.

Fixed through warranty. Electronics replaced. Works perfectly now!

- scroll wheel on the steering wheel is unresponsive.

Fixed through warranty. scroll wheel replaced. Works perfectly now!

3 years old and the brake discs are quite corroded. Not what I’m used to.

No update on this. No warranty fix.

tow bar is stuck, fortunately in the out position.

My fault... Didn’t pull the handle hard enough.... Works perfectly.

So you managed to deactivate the boot release on the remote using obdeleven, right? I thought it wasn't possible to do this. If so, is the electric tailgate still functional in every other way?

I used the Carista app and ODB plug, the iPhone alternative. Not sure what OBDeleven can do.

Yep you can still close with the remote, open/close with the button on the car, use your foot to open it, like before. The only thing that gets deactivated is the open function on the remote.

Not come across Carista before. So it's similar to OBDeleven, right? Do you have to pay a subscription to keep the amendments you've made?  Also are you able to make mods like Audi Throttle Response which you can with OBDeleven?

Carista is similar to obdeleven except it works with ios. Obdeleven atm is android only. Do a quick you tube search and it will bring up videos of carista

It's not as flashy as OBDeleven visually, and after the first trial week it uses a subscription model. I haven't seen the Audi Throttle Response mod yet but I just signed up for the beta so I can report back if it seems to be on the way. It does what it's supposed to do anyhow, and without hassle, and the support seems great. If  you know that it has some tweaks that you want to do then it's definitely a cheaper alternative to OBDeleven.

  • 5 months later...

Hmmm... Might get myself the Carista dongle and app. Could do with disabling that bloody remote boot opening 'feature'. I've found my boot wide open on several occasions and there have been times when it's been open for quite some time. Fortunately, a thieving toe-rag has yet to come across the car and empty the boot for me but it's only a matter of time. Got to be worth it for £16!

Speaking as a superb owner, I know it's fun to poke at Audi drivers how much more their cars cost for the same amount of features. However, there are real differences in things as materials and more importantly refinement (noise insulation) that is poorer on a Skoda.

In the end, one is not only paying for the badge and the latest tech (Audi generally gets it first) but also for added refinement.

For me, I can live without and happy with the thousands upon thousands of quids saved.

And to stay in topic, yes, OP should definitely get a Superb :)
