Premium fuels and fuel treatments. Worth it?

Featured Replies

How would you guys recommend I look after my engine if these fuels are just a load of rubbish then? Just regular oil changes and stuff? My engine has sounded a little rough lately so thought it might need some sort of clean up and im not exactly an expert with this sort of thing to be honest

Cheers for the help

Regular oil and filter changes are essential on a PD engine and you MUST use the correct type of oil suitable for that engine. Other than that, cam belt changes at specified intervals should ensure the engine keeps running reliably until kingdom come.

Follow the fixed time/mileage schedule unless you do at least 1.5x the recommended mileage annually.

its 10,000 miles on these engines, i do mine every 8k as its getting on a bit now. Dont think the long life oil is applicable to the old PD engines, better of with regular changes of the standard stuff, grade doesn't matter as long as it meets 505.01 (i think)

What sort of noise is the engine making? tappety?

It's due a service now really, I tend to do roughly 15k a year so perhaps in respect to what JWvrs25 said I should be doing a service perhaps every 6 months?

I thought perhaps it was 504.00 (https://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php). After going on that website I came up with either the 504.00 or 507.00.

Yeah I would say a touch tappety yeah

Just to be clear, premium petrol is worth the extra money if your car will benefit from the additional octane rating.

Father in law ran his TT on regular unleaded for about 5 years before I bought it off him, he had no idea he wasn't getting the full potential out it

Funny enough I had a mate who'd been running his 1.2 polo on regular but it says inside the flap "super unleaded"

Errr, 504.00 is for petrol engines, it does say that there, and it will kill your PD engine VERY quickly.

507.00 is what you want and you should change it every 10k which is 8 months in your case. Maths is hard, amirite?

Don't try and do 'long fill' at higher mileages on older cars, it will end in expensive tears.

507 oils tend to be rated 504/507, I.e. can't get one without the other.

I'd go with the 505.01 quantum platinum though, cheaper and just as good if changing every 8-10k. As per @JWvrs25 above; £21 for 5 litres delivered to you.

Yes, 507.00 is backwards compatible with everything before it and is suitable for both petrols and diesels, but an oil marked 504.00 only is absolutely not suitable for later specs.

Oh god I just read that the 504 was suitable for engines meeting the demands of euro iv emissions. I completely missed that it supersedes a petrol engine oil

But both the 507 and 505.01 would be suitable for a PD engine? changing roughly every 7-8 months? The maths is very confusing indeed :D
