Anyone had the emissions work done on an Octavia Mk2 Commonrail?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

We got the notification some time ago from Skoda about Dieselgate, and so far have done nothing out of fear. We live miles from anywhere, and really can't afford for the car to have problems caused by the 'update'.

My Dad's Volkswagon was also affected, but all he needed was a software update.

My understanding is that the Octavia 1.6 CR needs physical changes too.

If anyone can advise what exactly gets done I'd really appreciate it (maybe that will put my mind at rest!).

Even better, if anyone has had the work done, and if there were any issues afterwards.

Many thanks :)

Niki

The majority of VAG owners would say "Don't do it", They are probably correct.

The only real benefit you would gain is a better warranty on the EGR valve. These are a particularly weak design, and fail on both non-updated and updated Cars.

However they appear to be failing considerably more on the updated Cars.

Apart from the EGR a lot of owners are reporting many issues with their cars after the update.

It would seem that the update is trying to get an Engine to produce emissions much lower than it was originally designed to produce. This seems to cause so many problems that VW/Skoda, etc are offering to replace any one of 11 components that fail due to the update.

Personally, I believe that a Car which has not received the update is a better Buy. Consequently I would do nothing as you should find it easier to sell in the future, and should experience fewer problems during your ownership.

Just to add, the physical change is just an "Air-flow Transformer" which is simply a piece of plastic with holes in it which is placed inside the Air inlet Piping.

My own car had the update performed (prior to me buying it) . The ECU sits under the front plastic wiper panel and is screwed down and sometimes protected by a metal cage. I looked at mine a month ago and it was simply thrown back into position. It wasn't screwed down, just left loose. If that's any indication of how much care the Skoda guys take when performing the update I would be extremely wary about letting any of them near my Car.

edit; The EGR went on mine about 9 months and 5k after the update. I just had it mapped out and blanked it off. Total cost was around £80. Since then the DPF regens have gone from every 150 miles to every 450 miles.

'Just do not do it'.

Nothing in it for you.

New engine management software and a flow device in the air intake and a ticket to the lottery of possible issues.

Thanks guys - I'll give it a miss!

I would echo this, I (stupidly :)) had mine done and had all sort of problems afterwards. Mine was an automatic and it went to a higher gear very quickly and was very reluctant to come back down again, the number of times it was trying to do 20 in top gear up a hill was amazing, ended up driving it as a manual. Consumption also reduced by about 5%. Took it back to dealer and chief mechanic came out for a test drive and pronounced that all was okay and behaving as expected despite it kangerooing all over the place up a hill.

Have had ours done two years ago and have found no difference up to now, hope I have not put the jinx on it.
