I bought a boomba racing shortshifter kit a year ago and a new gear knob at the same time. The shortshifter was easy to fit only requiring removal of the air intake  - (i did the the clutch delay/return bleed mod at the same time as I had access to it whenever the air intake was out of the way). With the shortshifter attached throw was much reduced and felt much better. I only got round to fitting the gearknob today but wish i had done it sooner - the thing holding me up was I was unable to unclick the boot gaiter. After fiddling this weekend to try and wire in some LED dash mounted lights I was able to unclick this gaiter so went onto fit the gearknob.

 

The boomba racing gear knob is a hefty bit of kit weighing around 0.4kg and once fitted makes for a much better and shorter gear change compared wit the stock vrs knob (which had started to peel a bit anteriorly). Easy to fit only requiring a screwdriver to help unwiggle the stock gear knob, a craft knife to trim the gaiter off it and a cable tie to attach the gaiter boot to the new knob

 

Both the shortshifter kit and the gear knob from boomba racing are quality bits of kit and Have great instruction videos/pdfs re fitting (look at the golf mk7 items in their shop)

I had the forge short shifter and forge big knob on my old Audi TT, it made a huge difference to the feel of the gear shifts! I'm sure this would make just as a good improvement In the vRS! 

I had uadi TTS short shifter (it was an original audi part) and tweaked the standard knob in a old car of mine, by shortening it and adding weight. It was much snappier, precise and fast.

 

With DSG is only a matter of software, I'm afraid...

interestingly i watched the install video again and the Mk7 golf has a softrubber protector over the gear linkage mechanism underneath the gaiter - the octy doesn't and has all the linkage mechanism exposed - probably saves a few pennies......
