Trouble Starting

Featured Replies

Hi,

Seem to have a problem with my vrs more when cold I think. After work I went to start it and wouldn't start. I tried again and got it to start but cut out, did this a couple of times and managed to keep it running, pulled away and it was kangarooing quite aggressively once or twice when off the throttle. I have checked the battery and alternator and seems ok. I scanned it with a crappy cheap scanner and no faults. Not sure what else it can be. Any ideas would be great.

Coolant temp sensor? They don't always throw a code.

Yer I was thinking that or injector seals I don't know. I don't want to chuck money at it for the sake of it but guess that is a cheap part to start with.

Yes, pretty cheap to replace and they are notorious for failing.

Do you know how to test it with a multimeter to be sure?

I don't. You would have to know its resistance values at various temps and I don't.

There is a video about them where he basically says just to replace them...

Good find Lee!

There was a thread on here recently about a CTS leaking through itself and the coolant ending up at the ECU connector, the guy in the video has seen the same at about 2:40.

As for resistances; at 20°C  (ambient-ish) it should be in the range 2.25 to 3 kilohms; at 90°C (fully warmed up engine)  it should be between 200 and 280 ohms.  Access is tight/tricky to get meter probes in , if you try to measure in situ, depending on location on the engine.

Yes, I was surprised that they can leak past the pins. Can't beat VAG quality :D

If anyone knew the values I knew you would

I would strongly advise Rojer to only replace with a genuine item as some of the cheaper ones are terrible.

So not sure if this has any bearing but got in the car this morning and started on the button straight away, my driveway is on a slope with the front facing down. Maybe it only happens on flat not sure.

It's possible that you have an air leak in the fuel system, have you changed the fuel filter lately or disturbed any of the pipework?

@Rojer - Any other symptoms, like white smoking (and possible diesel smell in exhaust) when it's hard to start?

I did change the fuel filter a few months ago and replaced the little seals don't think it's leaking as couldn't see any when running.

Don't notice any smoke apart from hard acceleration due to map. Just went to the car after a couple hours and again started on the button.

You can't see air being sucked very slowly into the system while the car is sat overnight.

Hmm, well i think if that was the case then it would happen every time the car is cold, but it seems to be intermittent.

Ok, it's electrical then...
