This is catastrophic turbo failure

Featured Replies

It was turbo in case any one was interested pretty catastrophically, havent removed the turbo fully but last part to come off, as well as intercooler.

Just hoping that any damage with it running is minimal but who can say.

I do have a turbo but needs cleaning I need help splitting the chra off its stuck, need assistance from someone with an oxy torch

Shrapnel won't get through the intercooler, it acts as a trap for the swarf so the engine will be unharmed.

Cheers thanks for that. I actually strainer for metal and nothing there, so good stuff.

Intercooler is fit for bin I take it now ? Better to have new one as it wll be impossible to get all the shrapnel out ? FMIC perhaps ?

BTW one bit of metal I found got as far as almost into the air filter !

It does go everywhere. The intercooler will stop most of the broken turbo. Some small bits will find it's way into the engine. When I put a new head on my car there was small impact marks on the pistons from a previous failed turbo. But they will be so small they will be blown out through the exhaust valve.

Dark side actually gave me the advice of running the engine when the turbo was off the car to clear any of these small parts out. Block the oil return up and put the oil feed back into the oil filler.

Remember to renew the oil feed pipe.

You can get new cores for turbos which are a lot cheaper !

You can but when one fails like this the housings can get damaged and if its a VNT the vanes can get mashed up as well so you need to do a thorough inspection before you go down that route.
