Strange rear rattling noise

Featured Replies

Hello there.

I am the very happy owner of a late 2011 Yeti 4x4 DSG. It's brilliant and is perfect for us and what we do. It is totally reliable and I still enjoy driving it each time. I have done just over 60,000 miles. The car has a factory fit tow bar. However just in the past few months from driving away at low speed I hear a rattling/knocking noise which appears to be coming from the boot area. It sounds like it's inside. I have removed everything from the boot, checked the seats, checked the tyre repair kit under the floor, checked the tow bar, suspension etc and cannot find anything. at all. It's getting very annoying.

Can anyone shed any light on this mystery please? It's probably something simple that I've not seen or missed.

Thanks in advance.

Is the rear hatch a bit loose on the stops.
The adjustment is towards the bottom of the door each side.
Prise off the covers and move the adjusters out a little.
There should be a Torx screwdriver to fit them in the boot kit.

I had much the same rattle, which took the local Skoda garage sometime to find.  In the end it was found to be a broken calliper spring on the rear n/s brake.  Car was still under warranty - they couldn't source a spring on its own and replaced both sets of pads on the rear.  First time they had ever seen this - you could be the second?

I occasionally had a rattle at low speed and it was the hooks in the boot.

it seems the bar on the left could be a fraction thinner because all 4 hooks are loose on that side and tight on the right.

You only get 2 hooks each side as standard. Have extra loose ones been added from a different model?

Thanks very much Gents. All helpful and interesting. I've now found the problem and sorted it.

The first poster, Urrell, said it could be the locking system on the boot hatch. That's where the problem was located. I checked the receiver hook on the boot lip and that seems ok so I looked up into the lock itself on the door/hatch. I notice that the locking arm seemed to be loose. I tried to close the hatch a few times and while it closed it was clear that it wasn't locating properly in the receiver end of things. So pushed the bar/arm up and it clicked locked shut. Then blipped the remote to unlock it and closed the door and hey presto it located perfectly. So since yesterday all quiet in the boot!

Many thanks for the help and comments, much appreciated.

You're right 2 each side, I swapped them from one side to the other to see if they varied but it seems the rails are at fault because all the hooks are loose when fitted to the left rail and all firm when on the right.

You can let the kids out of the boot now

I had a similar problem on my Octavia I which wasn't the  locking system on the boot hatch  - It was actually the rear door latch/hoop coming loose but it sounded like it was coming from the boot!
