Auto Hold

Featured Replies

It is advised by some to put the DSG into neutral waiting at the traffic lights, and apply the electronic handbrake.  In the new Karoq there is also available Auto Hold, how does this differ from the handbrake use.  If remaining in Drive does the Auto Hold disconnect from the engine while you are stopped and reconnect when the accelerator is pressed.

If it works like in other VAG cars then the start/stop will have activated when you stopped as the auto hold engaged. A far simpler solution.

The Auto Hold is an excellent feature. It holds the car from rolling forward or backward when active and your foot comes off the brake (green light tells you it has activated). It will work when the engine is running or when the Auto Stop/Start has switched the engine off. It is far smoother to release the car when you press the throttle than just Auto stop/start.

I'm not aware of any advice to select neutral and apply electronic handbrake.

the gear box will select nuetral after aprox 10 seconds after auto hold is activated so leave in D ,auto hold is applied by the ABS stystem and acts on all four wheels and when it turns red this means its applied the hand brake ,I leave in auto mode and never touch the button

Hi patrolman.  Very interesting reply.  My only question would be, why on page 142 does it say that it does not work in mode N as it is not available?

Further to the last reply mine does not appear to revert to neutral, it sits in D until you move off.

It disengages the gears. The Gear indicator indicates 'D',  the Autohold activates if enabled. it you are putting to N or P or seat belt off, door open etc the Park Brake might be engaging.

It does not put it to 'N'  that is why it does not say it does.

There are slight variations in VW Group vehicles even in the past year or 2, but basically all much the same.

(Stop / Start to consider as well and if enabled and functioning or not, but as it is Autohold is a wonderful thing.

Maybe in your snowy snowy driving you might not want Autohold though, just Hill Hold Assist...)

Thanks for all that. I don't want to be difficult but if you are sitting on a slight slope stopped in Auto Hold and the gear on the instrument panel says you are in D1 how do you know that the gears are disengaged, or were is the evidence.

The clutches will be disengaged otherwise the engine would stall, same as if you applied brakes without dipping the clutch on a manual car.

You can roll to a stop with the engine running and be in D1 and then the car is not out of gear, ie Autohold functioning if you just lightly press the brake pedal.

So be aware the car can still move unless you press the pedal to have it function if enabled, or you need to use the Park Brake.

So what is the difference between stopping on a hill using Auto Hold and stopping on, the same hill using the electronic handbrake.

What the driver chooses to use or enable.

Hill Hold Assist,  Autohold, Electric Parking Brake.

I believe if using autohold the clutches are disengaged, if using the ehb the clutches are slipping to stop the engine stalling. Which on a dry clutch will cause some wear, on a wet clutch box it’s not really a problem.

Cheers Kenny R , that answer seems to make the most sense.  Either way, what a great motor!

I prefer and find the auto-hold very convenient both at traffic lights and on hills, both up or down and one engaged does not slip.  The only thing I find a little weird is when the DPF re-generation cycle is on and the engine revs are 'idling' around 1,000 rpm the auto hold does tend to snatch when you accelerate off, same thing happens if you have the auto start-stop enable and the engine start, then you pull off.  Rest of the time it works really well and allow me to pull off the the traffic lights very smoothly.  I only use the electronic handbrake when I park and before I put the gearbox into "P" (I have a DSG gearbox)

No need to do it manually. Stop the car on footbrake, autohold keeps brakes on. Put into P. Turn off engine. Electronic handbrake comes on automatically (you can hear it, and see red handbrake symbol illuminate).

Don't even have to turn off the engine, if you are keeping it running for what ever reason, just unfasten your seatbelt.

Auto hold brakes all 4 wheels using hydraulic pressure. EPB brakes rear wheels only using electric motor. The former seems a little smoother to release when you want to move off, but there’s not much in it. No point in putting EPB on manually, autohold is better. Just be careful if you decide to put the drive into neutral (DSG), autohold disengages and the car will roll unless you manually apply the EPB.

The Autohold actuator works by how hard you push the brake pedal, if any movement is detected it brakes harder.

The Electric Parking brake has that on or off, no inbetween.

Not on mine - just tried it! But perhaps because I disabled the seatbelt warning using VCDS - when on the airfield and wanting to drive a few yards, tow my glider etc it was always nagging me. One of the more useful mods I’ve done!

PITA when jumping in and out different cars to move them around and wanting to keep the engines running, different vehicles doing different things.

Thanks for the update Nicknorman.  Best answer to date regarding Auto Hold and EPB.

If undoing the seatbelt doesn't do it, then opening the drivers door should...

Yes it does.
