Playing media through USB socket.

Featured Replies

I have some films loaded onto a memory stick. They are in .mkv format and play on the Columbus OK.

These same films when loaded onto my Galaxy S8 and plugged into the USB socket Columbus tells me it can find no playable files.

When the Galaxy S8 is plugged into the USB socket where on the phone is the Columbus looking for playable files?

When plugging in your Samsung, are you selecting the right USB mode?

Drag down and where you see the USB connection notification, tap and switch between the modes.

As above, make sure you are using File Transfer USB mode instead of Photo or just charging.

If you plug your phone into your PC you should see the same as the Columbus will see.

you should be able to open the folder shown Inside the phone & find the movies.

Thanks gents I have done a you suggest. I have now put a couple of .mkv recordings on an SDXC card and they play on Columbus using either slot one or two. Put self same files on my phone and phone can see the folder but the .mkv files do not show inside. Put the same files on a USB memory stick and Columbus can see and play them. Do I need to change a setting on my phone?

Just out of interest I changed the .mkv to .mp3 on one of the files on my phone while it was connected to Columbus and straight away the file showed although Columbus couldn't play it. Changed file extension back again and it disappeared off the Columbus screen

Hi, I have tried to play similar mkv files on a usb on my columbus but get error no available/readable files?  are files fat32 or usb reformatted for ntfs so >4GB OK and does usb need to be empty and only mkv files on it? anything else I need check or do to see why not able to view/play? Thanks

I should have mentioned videos were >4GB and HD so maybe a resolution issue and only regular 4:3 resolution possible so would need edit for lower res ? do you know whats the max compatible res permitted?

I highly suspect it's more to do with the 4GB file sizes. Your phone may have a partition that supports larger than 4GB files, however when communicating via USB, it has to deal with the lowest denominator, which will be FAT32.

This unfortunately doesn't support files larger than 4GB.

Hi Thanks for reply.  I tried reduced file size but only got audio and no video for .mkv  file format.

Did the same files work ok via a USB pen? Usually audio and no video is a codec issue.

I tried a reduced file size of  a same film in .mkv (1.7GB) and mp4 format (665MB)  - only mkv format was recognised and audio played on usb stick.  usb 'saw' the mp4 file but if selected gave error message.

both files work ok on PC

looking at the manual looks like as say a codec issue and maybe bitrate or framerate too high  - file size was 720x576, total 2060kbps, 30fps so proably latter too elements over spec.  will try see if able to convert again and try when get a chance.

All my video files are 720 x 576 25fps .mkv videos. The Columbus can see and play them on a NTFS/exFAT and FAT32 formatted pen-drives or SDXC cards (128GB) but can't see them on my Samsung Galaxy S8.
