HI everyone.

 

I have just part exchanged my Skoda Octavia 15 plate 2.0L TDI 150 se.

 

I have had the car one full week now and so far quite pleased.

 

The motor trader I did the deal with didn't give me the MOT cert, so looked on line for anything noted from it.

 

When I looked online, it said there was an advisory for both front suspension. It said slight oil misting on front. I have spoken to the trader and they have asked to see the car for inspection. I have also asked my usual mechanic for his thoughts. He said Oil misting isn't uncommon but without a doubt is the start of a failing suspension and he would request they are changed. What are your thoughts on this? Should I push for a set of replacement front suspension?

Enjoy the car.

They are right misting is not unusual,  and can be an advisory year after year and no damper failure.  So not IME a sign of the start of failing suspension, 

other than all suspension eventually fails.

 

If you have a warranty and the right to a car fit for purpose as every trader must sell, then let them do the inspection.

Is your mechanic prepared to put in writing a report saying that they think the Dampers are going to fail soon or prematurely?

Up to you what you push for, but it will be down to the seller what you get if it is only misting on a car over 3 years old.

I had "light misting of oil" advisory on a VW Golf in the past, drove it for 20,000 miles like that with no issues. If you're at all worried get it checked out, better safe than sorry.

The trader come back to me and after a short chat decided to replace the suspension. More than happy with the outcome.

That’s great news

My front has misting as well - I'm part of a big club I didnt know existed
