Looking to buy a used Yeti 4x4

Featured Replies

Hey guys, Just looking for advice regarding a used yeti purchase. Ive been looking at a few, and a couple stand out for me. Ive mainly been looking at the TDi Option.

first one is a 2011 DSG outdoor in cappuccino beige, with a white roof. ~190,000 Kms on the clock, but looks well maintained. While i'm not too keen on the colour ( its passable but wouldn't be my first choice) the price is very attractive (under $10,000 AUD) i'm a bit worried about the high milage, ive been reading a few things on here about the haldex system going wrong, as well as the DSG having issues with high milage, both of these are expensive repairs and given the small selection of repairers over here it has me a little worried. but im leaning this way because of the price.

Second one is a 2012 DSG outdoor, in all candy white. ~90,000 Kms on the clock, also well maintained. priced at around $14,000 AUD so a little more but under half the milage of the first

third is a 2014 DSG outdoor, in the deep blue (which I like a lot). ~50,000 kms on the clock. i'm not sure about the facelift (kinda like the lights on the old ones) but it is the newer car. they are asking ~$17,000 AUD. this is a little out of my price range, however if its worth it (and the seller is willing to drop the price) then it makes it possible.

I've also read a bit about the timing belt/chain issues on some of the older cars but im not sure that made it to Australia as we only got the yeti in 2011.

so im unsure which one to buy, i'm unable to go and have a look in person until I decide so I will have a mechanic go and look at them for me (at $300-$400 a pop) then I can go down south to collect the car if the mechanic approves it. and begin my first Yeti adventure!

thanks!

Welcome.

Best say exactly what engines it is they have, and then what will matter is what they have had in the way of servicing the the Engine, DSG & Haldex.

Have they been into Skoda Australia or VW for the new 'Engine Management' because of the 'Emissions Scandal'.

What Guarantee or Warranty does that get in Australia, is it 24 months from being carried out?

Oh sorry, all of them are the 103TDI 2.0L

As far as Guarentee/Warranty goes as they are all private sales there won't be any. I haven't been able to find any I like with dealers around, otherwise there would be a statuary warranty (3months/5000km).

The Skoda Factory warranty only goes for 3 years from first delivery of the new car.

What i am asking about is the 'Trust Building Measure Guarantee' that the VW Group gave in some World Regions for those that had the vehicle in for the Voluntary Recall over the Emissions Scandal.

It can cause issues even though VW Group say not, and if there are Hard Ware Failings they can have to pay up.

?

Have you looked into that, which cars have has 'The Fix',  and do you want to risk owning one?

Ive heard of this but never actually looked into it, until now. Is there an easy tell to see which have been 'fixed'? Another thing is as I haven't actually driven one yet would I notice the power difference? and did the initial issue cause other issues other than emissions?

Hmm... the 2014 is certainly in the recall, I can't get the VIN numbers for the other two, but i'm going to guess they are in the same boat. So is that a deal breaker then? or are they still drivable?

They should be totally driveable, the only ones having issues will be those with issues, best see that that is not one someone is getting rid of.

Then the Haldex should have been given an oil change every 30,000 miles and the DSG every 40,000 miles,

so best see the Invoices & Receipts.

as long as they are still decent and power isn't reduced that much, otherwise I could look at the petrol version of the 4x4, but I was kind of sold on the diesel due to power and economy (diesel is also cheaper than petrol here at the moment) I guess if I haven't driven one prior to diesel gate then I wouldn't notice the difference, and if it is too slow to pick up then I can always find somewhere to get it remapped. I have no idea where I can get this done locally though.

on the ones I am looking at, do you think the 190,000kms will be an issue? or is the $4000 worth it for the lower kms?

At 190000km's, you will be at or approaching the life expectancy of the DPF and the egr valve is likely to need cleaning soon, unless already done following the "fix"

If these have been replaced worth considering.

Some have had issues with the dsg as well, perhaps by not using it correctly, and if it fails on a car of that mileage it will probably write it off.

Some have effectively had the fix removed by getting the car remapped back to near standard, or you could combine that with a power boost as well.

In the uk the extended warranty for the fix is two years or a stated mileage which the vehicle has coverd in total. Not sure what happens in your country or how close to the limit this car is in km's.

Where did you find that 190,000 km (~120,000 miles) is the life expectancy for these components? Based on the trust building measures, VAG/Skoda appear to expect both to last over 160,000 miles (~260,000 km). Otherwise they'd end up repairing too many that have failed 'naturally' rather than from the fix.

Of course, it can vary greatly depending on where and how it's been driven so premature failure can occur.

The 6 speed wet clutch DSG is not one that is known for having issues if Serviced correctly to the Manufacturers Service Schedules Oil changes.

The DQ200 7 speed Dry Clutch DSG is a different kettle of fish oil though.

& it has no service schedule.
