Black alloy wheels...

Featured Replies

Having read through a number of posts, it seems Skoda owners are a helpful, friendly bunch!

So, here's my 2nd post on my 1st day already

A few months ago, I had some fairly involved back surgery which led to me walking, for the foreseeable future, with a stick, and which in turn led to my purchasing an SEL Karoq for ease of getting in and out of a vehicle plus, in a previous life (and country), I owned a Hyundai Tucson for 10 years (never missed a beat and loved the slightly higher driving position).

As I'll be keeping the Karoq for probably several years, I want to do what I've done with previous vehicles and make it more 'individual' (as opposed to pimping it out!).

To this end, I'm thinking of changing the current wheels - the 18" Silver Braga rims - and trying to get Skoda approved 18's so as not to interfere with the spec or upset the insurance company!

Skoda promote a wheel which is listed on various Skoda websites as the "Mytikas" in black. Three dealerships I've spoken to have all told me the same thing, which is that they're on "back order" and new to the market, but they certainly don't seem to even be on the market in the UK whatsoever.

None of the dealerships seemed either particularly interested in looking into things further or helping out with any other ideas.

I don't really want to go down the road (if you'll pardon the excruciating pun!) of getting wheels from even a reputable alloy supplier (and there are quite a few good ones out there) if I'm likely to run into spec/insurance issues, not to mention the Tyre Pressure Monitoring thing.

Over to the Karoq forum - thanks!

  • Thanks for the response Offski. Have thought of that, but I don't think the Bragas will look as good (for me) as the "Mytikas" alloys, or any other number of alloys I've sussed out on wheel/rim websit

What about putting your car into a Wheel Refinnisher that will Paint or Powder coat the wheels you have in a day?

Thanks for the response Offski. Have thought of that, but I don't think the Bragas will look as good (for me) as the "Mytikas" alloys, or any other number of alloys I've sussed out on wheel/rim websites. The paint/powder coat option sure is a much less expensive way to go too. But as I'm planning on driving this baby for quite a while, I want something special

Welcome to the forum, I, like you have back problems and a karoq SEL and I'm also waiting for the black alloys to go with my petrol blue what colour is your car?

Hey Karoqer130 - Meteor Grey does it for me! That particular grey colour looks, in my opinion, very stylish with black alloys :) And, if I find them, there's more I'll be wanting to do, just to 'individualise' it. Nothing blingy! Just small details

I'm looking at getting my grill and window surrounds wrapped in gloss black and my roof bars possibly repainted to match and it would be a subtle nod to the Kodiaq vrs look, certainly in my location (central Scotland) new alloys from skoda were cheaper than powder coating or 3rd party suppliers.

  • Author

Yeah. I thought about the roof bars too - but I'm not sure that they still have to be removed to be wrapped successfully/properly. Haven't gotten that far yet! Thanks for responding and commenting on the alloys. Maybe I'll drive up to bonnie central Scotland :)

You shouldn't worry about tyre pressure monitoring. It's done by monitoring the wheels' rotational speed as reported by ABS. No dedicated pressure sensors in the rims.

In Bristol, you should not have a very important need for "real" snow capable tyres.

See my solution below. The "Titanium" color is almost black, actually nearly brake dust color. The combination fits the vehicle performance well. Whether you think the look is good or not is individual taste.

The 17" Triton Titanium wheels were easily available from Skoda.

Many thanks - I had no idea agedbriar!

It's still a bit of a maze though, trying to find out whether my insurance company will consider after-market fitted alloys/tyres (unless my existing tyres fit the potential new rims) are allowed without adding to the premium.

They 'say' it should be OK.

But I guess I won't know until such time as that happens!

Cheers

Hey Agerbundsen - thanks for your comments re: "real"  snow capable tyres.

It's not that I want to change the tyres (it doesn't snow often or much here in Bristol!).

It's more about the cosmetic/aesthetic 'look' I'm after, which can be achieved by having either gloss or matt/satin alloys.

Have seen my colour car (Meteor Grey) with black wheels (the Fabia Monte Carlo edition) with the black alloys and it looks coooooool

Regards...

Niiiiiiiice! VERY nice

I’ve just ordered some 17” Nanuq wheels in black from my local dealer. Should be here this week. No question about lack of availability.

As above, if you really like the style of your current wheels, then consider a paint job.

But having had several previous wheel paint jobs, they are never quite as good as OEM wheels.

Many thanks Boxer Boy! The Nanuq's look p-r-e-t-t-y nice and close to "Mytikas" I'm ideally after. To find someone who's been able to order some through their local dealer is encouraging also! I'll let you know how I get on...

Between the Mytikas and Nanuk is Triton

Thanks GrumpyFinn. I've seen the Triton's and they're not the "look" I'm looking for. Also, only 17". I want to replace the Sliver Braga's on my SEL with 18"'s. I'd even be tempted to go to 19" for the 'look'. But as you probably know, they ride harder, and part of the reason I bought my Karoq was for comfort

Mine came equipped with the 18" Braga wheels and Bridgestone tyres. They were not comfortable and quite noisy. IMHO the handling did not fit the vehicle - comparison was two Yetis over 9 years. The 18"-ers seemed twitchy in a manner that did not match the suspension design.

The switch to 17 " and CrossClimates solved both the twitchyness and the noise.

Cannot comment on the "look".

irfant - yeah, the black alloys really make it happen, especially, in my humble opinion, on a Meteor Grey Karoq!

Agerbundsen - I've heard that Bridgestone tyres are indeed noisy compared with some other brands, and certainly that 17" are better for comfort than the 18's. However, I've been driving a Peugeot 308 GT on "rubber-band" tyres for the past 18 months, and the Karoq seems to handle (comfort) and drive (noise) like a luxury vehicle in comparison!

There is no doubt that the 308 GT as the "past" compared with Yeti's for the last 9 years influence your expectations.

The 17" plus CrossClimates makes the Karoq handle much closer to the Yetis, which I really loved. Not quite as handy, but actually more comfortable and directionally stable on the highway at speed. Added weight and longer wheelbase likely the reason.

All good observations and advice - thanks Agerbundsen :)

Each to their own. I had the 18 inch factory Bragas ( plus the spoiler and side mirrors ) painted black. $500.00 NZD a lot cheaper than new alloys and really happy with them.

They look really good, I might just get my bragas powder coated
