Steering rack replaced - error code

Featured Replies

Hi,

Got my steering rack replaced today due to a clicking sound in the steering traced to the rack. I have scanned the car and have a 01309 fault power steering control module j500 implausible signal. Any ideas how to fix?

Got a full autoscan from VCDS or similar? Ideally before and after the rack replacement.

Do you have part numbers for both the old and new racks?

No afraid not on all counts, except no errors before replacement

Is the second rack you've fitted new or used/refurbished?

Did you fit it or a garage?

Where in the world are you as I doubt much can be done without a diagnostic scan.

It was fitted by a garage , vw Indy, and rack is new. A mate has vcds so he scanned it but all it shows is the error above

I don't doubt the code, it's just hard to offer advice without seeing what modules the car has and how they are configured.

What do I need him to scan for me?

A full vcds autoscan is a good start.

It'll create a text file you can open then just copy and paste here.

You can get the fault code removed. Got it done in an Octavia with the steering rack not replaced.

Auto electrician done it for us.

There is a big difference between just clearing the error code or removing it (the latter meaning you've found the issue and successfully resolved it). In the @psycho6149's case, we still don't know what the current situation is, all we know is that the old steering rack never threw errors and the (brand) new one does (and there are several reasons which might be the potential cause).

Clearing the code doesn't work it came straight back. Haven't had a chance to get to my mates house today to get another scan done, from what I remember nothing else showed up on the scan just the fault posted

Yes i done that with vag.

But the Auto Electrician was able to recode it some way that the light on the dash did not come back on. This was only done to get the car through the mot.

The steering rack was replaced later on and coding reverted back to original.

Has the steering rack got communication with gateway?

Has the new rack been programmed correctly (steering curves etc).

You cant just fint a new rack and thats that. If that fault code stored in J500 itself?

The rack was fitted by my garage - they said they had done the programming. It would seem they didnt or didnt do all of it.

Car drives fine and steering seems ok. No warning lights showing

@John-Le-Taxi - you're not talking about the same thing, the OP only has an issue on the VCDS, no errors get displayed elsewhere (instrument cluster, maxidot, ...)

No bother, I thought it was.
