Replacing Anti Roll Bar Bushes

Featured Replies

How difficult is it to change the anti roll bar rubber bushes on a 1.4 TDI.

Any pitfalls to watch out for.

Pretty straight forward. Jack the front up, wheels off then think it’s 2 13mm bolts either side.

Offset ring spanner comes in handy. I suggest spraying with release / penetrating oil if possible the day before.

Dremel armed with the thin cutting discs is also handy to have available if you are doing the drop links at the same time "just in case"

When the driveshaft appears to be in the way of getting a socket on one of the bolt heads, remember that you can move that upwards by jacking under the end of the wishbone.

If you can wire-brush some of the rust off the bolt tips before undoing, you're much less likely to tear up the threads in the brackets. And yes, as above, PlusGas on the bolt tips well before undoing will make a good difference.

Wino, thanks for the info.

as above..I think it was the drivers side wishbone which had to be jacked up as the driveshaft was in the way...it was a long time ago when I did mine..

also Plusgas is about the best penetrating oil/spray...been using it for well over 12yrs now....great for stuck wiper arms on the spindles...& doing the rear wiper jet repair kit...etc...

also does your ARB have the welded/formed shoulder rings on it to stop it sliding thought the bushes??...

Did it myself a couple weeks ago. Its a tight squeeze. I managed to get to it with a flexible joint extension.

After fitting new anti-roll bar bushes my car now feels and drives like new with no suspension noise.
