Archoil / 2 stroke oil in 2011 CR diesel?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just wondering, does anyone add a bit of mineral 2 stroke oil or archoil type stuff to the fuel in a modern CR diesel with dpf? I have a 2011 2.0 tdi Octavia scout, 85k miles, just wondering if there's anything I can add to the fuel to clean things out a bit in the engine? Or are they all just snake oil? I use decent diesel, not supermarket if I can avoid it, and get around 50mpg. But it's a bit clattery on start up.

I've looked on the internet (including briskoda) and found quite a lot of people saying 2 stroke oil is great and quite a lot of people saying it's bad, especially for more modern engines... And that if it was any good manufacturers would recommend it.

Other people reccomend archoil, though it's quite pricey. Any thoughts / experiences?

Cheers.

If you must put anything into your diesel fuel, use Millers diesel power ecomax

Nothing else and experimenting with 2 stroke oil is tempting fate, remember modern CR diesels operate at very high peak fuel pressures, much higher than older diesels.

I have been using 2 stroke outboard mineral oil at 200:1 for the last 2 years/50,000km in my 2012 CR Scout.

What I know - engine runs significantly quieter, Much reduced Diesel rattle.

                       - engine is noticeably smoother.

                       - marginal improvement in fuel economy.

What I hope - increased fuel pump and injector life due to better lubrication.

                      - longer DPF life due to reduced exhaust soot. Based on anecdotal evidence from use in older non DPF vehicles.

Only time will tell if my decision was a good one.

I'd just use a few tanks of decent diesel and when it's up to temperature use full boost to get everything moving. Other than that, make sure it's been serviced with new oil/filters/fuel filters etc.

About the only study I came across was this: http://www.fuelexpert.co.za/2-stroke-oil-in-diesel-technical-study.php

That's enough warning for me not to bother despite anyone's perceived effects. If anyone can find a study showing benefits it would be interesting to read.

Thanks for the link, this pretty much sums it up for me.

Though, there is a bit of use for 2 stroke in old petrol V8's for some upper cylinder lubrication.

Thanks all

That fuelexpert article does look pretty conclusive. I saw reference to a Swedish Ministry of Transport article that apparently suggested there were some benefits, but can't now find the article, or the source. Ho hum. I'll stick with decent diesel and rev it a bit harder! (I don't generally go much above 3000 RPM I suppose, and that only briefly). Might consider Archoil or Miller's ecomax in future... Anyone else used these with good or bad results?

Twrecks, be interested to hear how it goes for you. But I see you're in Australia, and imagine your diesel spec might be different to ours...?

Mines the 2.0 ltr PD engine and i use Archoil AR6900-D, Been using it a while now and it does seem to make the engine smoother and a bit less agricultural .. But then again it might just be all in my mind..   :D    But noticed when cleaning the inlet manifold, The EGR valve was a lot cleaner than it was last time i cleaned it out..

I used Miller's diesel ECOmax for about 16 years on my SEAT Alhambra 1.9tdi AHU 150k miles. That had a Bosch rotary pump. You certainly knew when it was in tank and when it was not. Smoother instant cold start with none of the harsh diesel knock, smoother idling and running presumably higher cetane did that. Started using it after an MOT smoke test was marginal. It certainly cleaned it out quickly, lots of black smoke under hard acceleration for about 100 miles or so. And then nothing, clean and fast pass on every MOT after up to 20 years old when I finally traded in. And the mpg/performance all seemed better.

Main benefit for me was it changed idle/running noise from argicultural to smooth and no worry about smoke.

It gave a similar transformation to when using BP ultimate after running on plain regular. Shell Vpower however didn't seem to work as well. Miller's is a lot cheaper to use and gives similar subjective results to BP ultimate.

It states suitable for Euro 6 vehicles and DPF so should show similar benefits with modern CR diesels.

On the other hand I do NOT recommend Miller's petrol ECOmax which I suspect may contain MMT or something similar (much bright red hard ceramic deposit on spark plugs indicative of manganese).

Miller's have denied petrol ecomax contains MMT although it says on the bottle to keep out of sunlight. (MMT breaks down under UV). Too risky for me.

I've tried archoil ar6400 d pro diesel cleaner and have no hesitation in recommending their products as they do work.

Another recommendation from me too. Used it on 3 different pd engines and one CR all with good results. Need to buy some more soon as its been 100k since my last "clean" on the octavia, and now also have a caddy van that needs sorting out with a good drop of archoil.

That's interesting, I will put the question to them and see what response I get.
