Space saver / full sized spare wheel advice

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum :)

I've recently bought a Karoq and it only has a puncture repair kit. Can I just buy a space saver wheel and tools and pop it in the well under the boot floor? Or does it all have to be ordered when new (ie is the boot well a different shape depending on the spare wheel options)? Also, apart from cost, is there any reason not to buy a full sized spare wheel instead? Again, would it just plop into the well?

Thanks for any advice and I hope it's not a daft question!

Cheers,

Ben.

the forum won't seem to let me quote my previous info on this, we bought a spare wheel, finally back in June the dealer had to separately order the parts as Skoda had not released the spare wheel kit, we paid £187 all in, then it was cheaper to get all the parts separately, search my posts and you should be able to find it.

Okey doke, thanks chums :)

I bought anaftermarket space saver with jack etc. and the foam insert that wraps around the wheel (less than £10 from Skoda), jack sits in the centre of the wheel and it all fits nicely, if you have the full sized spare doesn't raise the boot floor up ?

I recieved my Karoq 1.0 and it has a smaller then normal tyre. Its size is 215/60R16 99v

That was to save space, but it is not a 'Space Saver' and obviously not a 'Full Size Spare' for your car, but would be on a car with 215/60 R 16's.

VW Group only do limited sizes of Steel Wheel Spares with Tyre Sizes.

yes you are right, it was just to demonstrate what size spare could fit in the Karoq.

I think only in a Karoq with fixed seats.  If you have Varioflex, the spare must be narrower (125?) space saver.

I believe that is correct.

My SEL with varioflex seats has a 125x70 on 18" spare

Interesting! It surprised me that the same model has different Tyre diameters!

visited https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ and found that your model have a diameter of 63.2 cm while mine has 66.5 cm. I would have thought that an 18" Tyre would be 225/45 18...

This alters many things including car speed calibration, vehicle height and many more factors. I wasn't aware of this.

When we purchased our Karoq there was a choice of wheels to buy, depending on trim level.  For the SE only, a full size spare wheel was available.  For the SEL and above a temporary steel wheel, 215mm width, and for 4x4 models a space saver wheel, 125mm width.  I presume that the spare wheel well is shallower on the 4x4 and the varioflex seats encroach slightly, dictating which wheel fits in which variant.  As mentioned previously, only a very small range of spare wheel sizes is available so the spare may not be a perfect match.

I noticed mine states a space saver spare size on the label inside the petrol flap, something like 125/70 x 18, mine didn't come with a spare, so I assume this will be on all models

The space saver wheel is needed for the 4x4 versions - they only have a shallow well for the wheel as the space under the floor is needed for the Haldex unit. The tool kit and polystyrene casings say they are for fixed seats only - however the problem is that there is no cut out for the Varioflex handles. This is easily rectified with a craft knife and careful cutting,

A bit off topic, but (I think) that red, rectangular device under the seats in your last picture is the signal booster which is causing all the hassle and butchering. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Out of interest, if it is, when was your Karoq registered and when did you get it John?

You know - I wondered what the red rectangle was when I did the work but never got round to asking on the forum!!

My Karoq was one of the first - a launch model at my dealership. It was built in November 2017 and first registered in Jan 2018. I bought it in Feb 2018. All pre booster controversy.

Thought it might be. Mine was also first registered in Jan 2018 and also one of the first at my dealers as their demo. (If) my car ever gets near a Skoda workshop, I would probably whip that part out (if it is indeed the booster). I'm getting pestered from DM Keith about it's first service, but I haven't had chance to ask them whether or not they have a policy of butchery of the said parts (although I'd take their response with a piece of salt). I've been using a local VAG specialist garage for years now so I'll probably continue with them.

I have wondered if they will do anything about it at the service - I have had emails about the service but I am on a variable interval and have about 9K miles to go yet.

On the 125/70 18 space saver, could any of you tell me what the et number is which is stamped on the wheel (offset) looking for a spare for my 1.5 sel on 18s and found a bunch but all with varying et figures. Many thanks

Offset is ET25.5 on the 125/70/18.

anyone have the part number for this foam insert? Presuming this is an 18” space saver and the foam isn’t raising the floor level.
