Any way to limit maximum radio volume or disable the Colombus volume control?

Featured Replies

I had a situation tonight where a passenger suddenly decided turn the radio as loud as it could go. I was in the middle of a turning at traffic lights and had to do an emergency stop because I could not drive like that and the wheel was being turned so my fingers weren't next to the controls.

I told him if he touched the radio again he would be thrown out and switched if off completely.

Situations like that are frankly dangerous for me when I'm driving, is there any way to either limit the volume output of the columbus or make volume control only from the steering wheel?

are you serious?

I cant see how that could warrant an emergency stop endangering other drivers.

Just don't give that person a lift if you feel that strongly.

AFAIK there is no way to limit the volume.

Put them in the back seats?

If that sort of event is a problem for you in a medical (as I cannot see any reason why it would necessitate an emergency stop) sense then remove the Columbus control knobs. Otherwise apart from not carrying the passenger again or only putting them in the rear seat as mentioned above you have no other options.

If I walk into a nightclub my ears literally hurt and I walk out again, so having the volume unexpectedly turned up all the way was like if some one poured hot water over me. Could not drive like that.

How do I go about removing the volume knob and if I do remove it, can the Columbus be still switched on?

Removing the control knob will simply leave the spindle sitting there for someone to turn (if they feel the need) so won't be much use. Yes, it'll still turn on as you'd simply press the spindle rather than the knob itself.

Your better option is to warn your passengers not to touch the stereo. I appreciate how unpleasant the experience was (I'm not comfortable with loud noises myself) but breaking your car stereo isn't the solution.

Your passenger may not have realised how unpleasant that was for you before they did it: if they accept they screwed up, great. If they won't accept that then you can tell them to foxtrot oscar next time they ask for a lift.

Some sticky tape and a warning label?

Hammer, meet fingers?

The problem is that I drive a private hire vehicle and its a random draw of the dice whether the next passenger is a moron or not. I try to park my car in nice areas of the city but it doesn't always work like that.

I do warn them they will be thrown out if they touch the volume again. But in situations where by doing it the first time when I am concentrating on the road causes me to quite possibly have an accident because I am in pain doesn't help. I want to remove that scenario.

I'll hook a unit up to my machine and see if there's any settings to do as you ask, but I'm not sure it's anything possible.

It's pretty f*cking rude for a customer to touch anything in the car IMO. Put a warning in the car that customers are not to interfere with any controls. Just don't stick it on the passenger airbag cover.

Sorry, nothing available to reduce or limit maximum volume I'm afraid.

Went with the duct tape solution as suggested by someone above.

Crude and basic but effective.
