When to change Timing / cam belt?

Very likely you won't. Depends how long the rest of the car keeps going and/or how old you are.

The chain will probably last the life of the engine. Chains soon let you know when attention is required. I had a Triumph Dolomite with a noisy duplex chain after 80k but it was written off in a rear shunt two years later

Correct

Xman post with engine photo now leaves me confused - at first glance my roomster should have a timing chain, but to the left of the oil filter & below there is an obvious belt winding around several pulleys on alternator etc. Surely this is a timing belt ?

Engine code: CBZA

Roomster 1.2 litre petrol 64Kw

Obvious belts are nearly always auxiliary belts, not timing belts.

Timing belts have crossways teeth on the inside surfaces.

Your car has a timing chain. See the two diagrams upto- and post-23/10/2011  about a third of the way down this page with "camshaft timing chain" in the titles and CBZA in the notes column. https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/roomster/ro/2012-699/1/

Many thanks.

Amazing ! Never seen such diagrams. (Obvious reason - I'm not a practical enthusiast)

Never had a car with a timing chain before, driving around for years in diesels with constant nagging worry about belts snapping, pulleys breaking etc after it happened on a diesel Scenic high up on moors.

So now I wonder what's the service requirement of the belt & pulleys I can see ?

Depends how long you're keeping the car. Might be worth inspecting now or on the tenth birthday of the car, look for cracking  and bits falling out between the cracks on the peaks of the 'vee' pattern on the inside of the belt.  I changed one on a 2002 Golf recently that I'm pretty sure was the factory fitted one, it was still working fine but looked well dodgy:
