215 65 16 Tyre upgrade

The Plumber, one of our Yeti pioneers and gurus, posted way back in 2010 on the various Škoda Yeti approved wheel/tyre sizes here:

It's become a long thread over the years but I don't recall 215 65 16 as being included.  Check for yourself, of course, (and have a look at the Tyre Pressures label inside your filler cap lid), but Llanigraham's warning about your insurer is a good one.

That size is not listed on the Certificate of Conformity for my current Yeti.  I'd be surprised if other models in the range had been type approved with any sizes other than those - which, for information, are:

225/50 R17 94W#7Jx17 ET45

205/50 R17 93H M+S#6Jx17 ET45

205/55 R16 91H M+S#7Jx17 ET45

205/55 R16 91H M+S#6Jx16 ET50

215/60 R16 95V M+S#7Jx17 ET45

Actually, I've only just noticed that all but the OEM 225/50R17 are listed as "M+S", which seems to suggest that they would be conformant only if they had the M+S mark (which is largely obsolete anyway, the 3PSF being the recognised marking for winter tyres).  Odd.

It's easy, and free, to get the certificate of conformity for your specific vehicle from Skoda UK, see here: http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/vehicle-import-export

The 215/65 R16 is more than 2cm bigger in diameter than the largest diameter type approved tyre, the 215/60 R16.  That sounds to me as if it might create clearance issues.  Bear in mind that (a) the user manual does not list 215/60 R16 as a permissible tyre size for using snow chains on the front wheels, and (b) even with the smaller size wheels it states that chains with links no bigger than 12mm be used.  (I'm referring to the May 2017 edition of manual.)  Basically, with a 215/65 R16 your tyre would be nearly as big in diameter as a 215/60 R16 with 12mm snow chains, which the book says you should not use on the front wheels (that combination would be OK on the back).

On top of that, as others have said, insurers may not like you running a non-approved tyre size.

@gmx-yeti, Welcome to the forum.

?

Which country are you in?

& Why do you consider the taller sidewall tyres as an Upgrade rather than just an Up-sizing?

Is it more rubber around the wheels you want, for clearance or comfort?   Are you going to use them offroad?

PS

You still get M&S marked tyres,  you can get M&S marked tyres that are also 3 Peak marked / Winter Certificated.

As an example, Vredestein Quatrac 5.

There are people that use M&S Tyres through the year and in winter might use more Winter / Snow Based tyres or not.

Any feedback after changing to 215 65 16 from 215 60 16 for 2011 1.2 77 TSI. Its a difference of 3.2%.Did anyone have any issues with your transmission or ride quality other than a slight change to odo reading.I am looking for long term review.

I have 215/65 R16 (Michelin Latitude Tour HP) on my Skoda Yeti 2012 Elegance 4x4 (TDi) for the last 3 years and have no issues at all and the clearance in the wheel arcs is abundant even after 2 cms increased in diameter. It is very hard to get a good tyre at the OEM size (215/60 R16) in my country (India) and hence, I and other Yeti owners have switched to 215/65 R16 (which is available widely as it is OEM tyre size for many other crossovers in our region e.g., Duster).

Trying to figure out what rim size would fit with 215 65 r16 amongst all the tyre size mumbo jumbo?

As you can see in the chart below, a 215/65R16 tyre size can be fitted to a rim between 6J and 7.5J. If you're not sure what rim width to use for this tyre size in the ETRTO approved range, then 6.5J is a good starting point and hence is highlighted in bold.

ETRTO approved rim widths for 215/65R16 tyre size

215/65 6.0-6.5-7.5

These rims are close to the standard ET45 Yeti offset and 6.5J is an ideal rim width for a 215/65R16 tyre size.

The below photos are actual photos of these rims and are not generic photos.

Working backwards; I'd imagine if I buy used rims with 215 65 16 tyres fitted off an octavia they will likely be suitable for the yeti (or is my thinking open to flaws...)

215/65R16 isn't a standard Octavia tyre size.

Correct my mistake I bought them thinking they were 215 65 r16 but were in fact 60.  I've my set of 225 50 17 to wear out and then the rest of this set before I get to my end goal....
