Glow Plug Issues

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Looking for some advice if possible.

Recently my 2011 Superb 1.6 diesel glow plug light came on. I have a good code reader but it came up with an unknown code "001CAF," no matter where I look I cannot find any reference to that code?

Engine goes in to fail-safe mode and can rectified by turning engine off and back on, twice the engine management light has come on as well.

As there is 103,000 miles on the car I though replacing glow plugs might resolve the problem, but to no avail.

Any ideas

Thanks in advance

Hi there sounds like what happened to me, I have a 2.0 tdi and the same happened to me, turned out to be EGR mine went at 117k, i also had a glow plug down. I had a new EGR and 4 glow plugs  fitted for £800. I maybe wrong but perhaps someone close to you can do a VCDS scan to be sure...good luck.

The glow plug light doubles up as an engine malfunction indicator: it doesn't mean the glow plugs are faulty.

Doing some quick digging on Google, 001CAF in hexadecimal converts to 7343 in decimal, and searching for that suggests an EGR fault.

Next step is get it scanned properly and confirm the diagnosis.

Thanks guys, looks like the one problem I was dreading

Has it had the emissions fix? If it has, you might find a repair is covered by the trust building exercise.

No it hasn't actually, previous owner refused to get it done

In which case, I'd be tempted to get a VCDS autoscan to see exactly what the error is.

Have you cleared it to see how quickly it comes back?

Looks like it....

Light comes on when cold or hot, usually within 5 -10 minutes after driving. If I keep running it the engine management light comes on

If you could clear the code and nurse it gently to a dealer to get the update done, you might get yourself a free EGR under the trust building measure.

I might give it a try, thanks

From a very quick google, it *might* just need a software update.

Based on 7343, I found this: http://www.bba-reman.com/forums/Topic134783.aspx

Quote

7343 - EGR Potentiometer (G212)
P0407 00 [040] - Signal too Low

That links back to: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16791/P0407/001031

Which suggests that:

Numerous RoW market flash updates and recalls exist for this DTC in CR TDI engine sizes; 1.2L, 1.6L and 2.0L.

If you do get a VCDS use to scan your car, post your autoscan up as that'll show the ECU part number and software version. From that, I can probably take a guess if there is a software update prior to the fix.

There is still a good chance the EGR is sad and needs replacing of course.

Thanks for your time and help on this one, I will get a full scan done. There's only one other think that it's started doing, now the stop/start has stopped working, don'y know if this has anything to do with it?

Oh, the irony there ... :D

If the EML or glowplug light is on, the stop/start is disabled.

I had an EGR fault on my Superb, cleared the code just outside the dealers using my laptop and VCDS, had the EA189 emissions fix done, rang them up on my way home when the EML light came back on, booked it in for a free brand new EGR under their 'Trust Building Measure'. Saved me hundreds of pounds...

I'd planned to have the emissions fix removed afterwards, but the car drives no differently and fuel economy improved (might be the new EGR rather than the emissions fix), so I've left it alone.
