Headlight issues, not moving up at start

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been driving Audi A6 for more than 20 years but ordered a new Superb that was delivered yesterday.

But when driving home from the Skoda shop I realized that the left headlight was pointing down to the ground. By restarting the car both headlights was first "dancing" as they should and then ended up in correct positions. This morning the same happens, but now the right headlight instead. After two restarts they were both ok. When I should drive home from work this afternoon it was the same again (right light again this time).

If I restart the car again directly when they are ok, the behavior is normal and they seems to found correct position.

I have understood that Skoda have had an issue with this about a year ago, and the firmware was changed to delay the adjustment until engine is started. This is also how mine behaves - no "dancing" until the engine has been running for a few seconds. So I think my problem is not the same (disturbances/dips during crank) because it seems that I already have the upgraded firmware.

I tried my VCDS to look for some hints or maybe fault codes, but my adapter (HEX-USB+CAN) seems to be too old for this car. Worse, the Skoda seller isn't really helpful (although the car is brand new) and only tell me I have to contact Skoda service team/workshop by myself. Nice service when buying a brand new car :-(. But I will, of course, as soon as possible.

Anyone with an idea ?

Hi @Ingper. Yes there have been a number of threads on here about that. The software update for headlights is 94k1. I'm surprised a brand new car wouldn't have had it done though. My headlights do the "dance" when I press the start button (I have Kessy and leave the lights set to auto) and I usually let them finish before starting the car. If I'm in a hurry and just start up, the dance happens during the crank, never a few seconds later. I'd get it checked out if I were you - something doesn't sound right.

Probably an old new car. Maybe why the seller doesn't want to know.

Aren't there consumer laws in Sweden?

I had this issue twice on mine and noticed on both occasions it was when it was cold and the car had been standing a long time, either on my driveway overnight or in my work car park all day.   An engine restart seemed to correct the issue, the headlights done their start-up dance and everything was fine.  I mentioned it to the dealer when I px'd the car and they said they were aware of the TPI which @BriskodaJeff mentions above.  I'd be very surprised/shocked if this was the same issue, on a MY19 new car.

Was it a recent factory order or had it been sitting around, un-registered?

Thanks for the answers.

It is a brand new car, built from my own specification (assembled in october 2018). And it seems to have the new firmware, because of the delayed action, a few seconds AFTER engine start. I have also Kessy.

Yes, there are consumer laws in Sweden :), and I will contact the service people. But I have low trust that they will know anything about it, and will start changing random things (headlights etc.)

Btw I have another issue ongoing - besides the diesel driven parking heater I have also ordered the car with electrical heater (230V) and battery charger inbuilt. Quite common in Sweden. But they have installed a different brand than negotiated (Calix instead of DEFA), and none of our cables and connectors we already have fits.

Today they agreed to redo the installation but now with the correct parts, without additional costs for me.

That's why I have no trust for this dealer and workshop.

Anyone that have a MY2019 with this issue, or still have problems even with 94k1 update ?

i had the headlight software update (94K1) done back in June this year - the key difference, i noticed with mine, is the return back up to position part.

prior to that - my left headlight used to misbehave, like u've described.

before the update, hit start button, headlights:-

- immediately goes down

- left and right

- centre

- up

after the update, hit start button, headlights:-

- immediately goes down

- left and right

- centre

- delay for approx. 2-3 secs

- up

Thanks for the detailed clarification of the differences. Mine is acting exactly as this, i.e. it's obvious I have the updated firmware.

It's the last step, "up", that is sometimes not happening, although the engine has then been up and running for seconds. I'll check next time it happens if it seems to be "dead" already before the last step (i.e. not performing the left/right).

My car is build April this year, had the problem 2-3 time the last two month.

A restart helped.

Mines just done it!

Resarted twice before it sorted it out.

I recently had my rear radar sensors tweaked. When I picked the car up they said they have updated the lighting software for your potential problem. A trip to the dealer will sort it if it's under warranty.

Interesting @Baggins and thanks for the update. Is it conceivable that previous TPIs are not being rolled into the core software installed on new cars?!! Unbelievable if so. Did your dealer tell you what the update was? Mine recorded the 94k1 update on my invoice.

Why is that surprising? You buy the car from a salesman and basically that's is his job done. When its due for repair or service you contact the service desk, they have the expertise to deal with that type of work.

In some establishments its in the same building. In some its on site but a small walk. In a couple of dealers we have used the workshops were across the road.

Not a big deal is it?

Would you go to the service department to buy a car?

Not specifically, just mentioned that an issue with some lights not moving correctly has been put right under warranty. I didn't get an invoice as they will have sent it on to my insurance company.

(Cracked bumper)

Did this to me the other day when I drove away in a hurry.  RHS light pointing to the ground.

Restarted it, let the lights dance before pulling away and it corrected itself.

Always fine as long as i let the dance proceed first.

After the software update - there will b no need to stop the car and restart.

Prior to the update, I found myself doing this on the odd occasion.

Was annoying having to stop and restart.

But the problem for me is that I already have the new software in my car....

My lights had the software update in the summer but on a number of occasions over the last few weeks the lights have stayed very low, only lighting a bit of the road ahead. Switching off engine sorts it but shouldnt need to. Car is going in for service in a couple of weeks so will ask about it then. Seems to be worse when cold.

Interesting. At least one more with new SW and the same problem.

I haven't seen the problem during the last days now, but it has also been a lot colder (-14°C this morning). When I saw it last time it was +2...+5°C. In some days it will be the same weather condition again, let's see if the problem on my car returns.

When at service, ask them to read out and see if there's any failure codes stored, and if so ask for a printout copy. I will get a new VCDS adapter next week to check mine (my old adapter wasn't compatible to the latest modules on MQB platform).

  • 2 months later...

Ingper, did you get this sorted out? I just yesterday got te same issue and the car is also MY2019 build end of Oct 2018 and I assume it has new software applied.

In fact, it hasn't happened anymore since the first weeks.

In fault memory there are nothing related to this (checked with VCDS) - but I have some other sporadic notes in memory that I will bring up at next service.
