vRS thermostat change...

Featured Replies

Good evening all,

So I'm going to change my thermostat, Ive seen on here that i need new thermostat housing?

However i spoke to a couple of my mates and they say that ill be fine to re use my old one, but i dont want to break it and be left without a car for a few days!

Does anyone have a part number or is this the right thing i need; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coolant-Flange-For-Audi-Seat-Skoda-VW-CA3623/113003094135?fits=Model%3AFabia+I|Cars+Type%3A1.9+TDI+RS&hash=item1a4f826077:g:gH4AAOSweltbALNk:rk:1:pf:0

Thanks!

Looks like the right part according to the cross-reference to 045121121A, see here (item 8): https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2004-225/1/121-121010/

If you have a helpful Skoda parts department nearby, or a TPS who deal with the public, a genuine item is actually rather cheaper than that though.

According to this site the RRP is £6.04 + VAT which comes to £7.25 in your hand by my maths.

Genuine stats are pricey compared to aftermarket but may also be worth consideration as you don't really want to have to do the job twice. Bizarrely, you have to buy the o-ring separately if you buy genuine though.

Be careful with the two bolts as you do the job, they're an M7 thread, so you may not be able to pick up a replacement locally if there's a problem part way through the job.

Thanks for your help again, my local skoda dealer is in sheffield and I think they run Skodaparts.com.

Ill give them a ring tomorrow, id rather buy genuine and not have to mess around twice!

The non genuine housings don't even usually have the little tabs that break off (that hold the thermostat)

I bought a new oe housing just in case but could easily have used the old one.

This is where a vacuum filler is really handy.

This interests me as my thermostat is only a few months old and the engine is very slow at warming up again. What are the tabs for as I have never seen them before,I am guessing they might be left over from the plastic moulding process maybe,or are they to keep the stat from moving ? The previous post mentions holding the thermostat, does this mean do they break off? Has anyone seen this and where do the tabs go to?

Are metal thermostat housing available,as I have only seen plastic ones.

If your engine is the same as the vrs pd130 then the genuine housings have 2 plastic sort of pins, its hard to explain but by turning the thermostat in the housing the pins/tabs then hold the thermostat to the housing which makes it slightly easier to fit. That is all they do.

When you are removing the housing to change the thermostat you should turn it 90 degrees so that the thermostat is released from the housing but often these tabs break off.

I've had one break off. Car started taking ages to warm up, removed cover to find one of the plastic lugs wedged in the thermostat ;-)
