Smoke under hard acceleration

Featured Replies

Got a 67 VRS DSG TDI and this is my first TDI for over 12 years. I noticed this week if I acccelerate hard (kick down 6th to 4th ) I get what looks like white smoke or a lot of condensation for a few seconds . Not loosing coolant or no major oil use. Only noticed in the dark and not in day light

It does sound like the normal puff of exhaust condensation, especially if you're seeing it in the dark as you'd expect the temperature to be colder.

Couple of questions however....

  • Does it do it each and every time you bury the throttle?
  • Do you think your car may have been doing an active regen at the time?

Not every time maybe 2 out of 3 more so if I’ve been a low speed for a few miles (50ish mph for a bit). Don’t think it was regen as it happened yesterday and today

If it were white smoke, especially if your engine is cold, it could possibly be unburnt diesel.

If it's doing it when the engine is at optimal temperature, it's could be a coolant ingress into the combustion chamber. HOWEVER, I can't imagine on a less than a year old car, you'd be in need of a top end rebuild.

Not loosing any coolant and it’s not doing it under normal driving just if I bury the throttle.  It’s only done 11k miles so it should be ok

All I'd say is keep an eye on your levels and if it gets noticeably worse, go and get it checked out.

As I'm sure you'll understand, if you bury the throttle, you'll have a larger volume of gas and you'll notice it more. Certainly in the colder weather.

Mine does this from time to time since I had it 30k ago. More so if pootling about for a while before a few hard pulls and the exhaust is heating up more. The damp weather seems to make it worse or more visible for 5 to 10 seconds.  No problems found.

I had this on my old MB 250D.  It turned out to be a fine hairline crack in the cylinder head. Could also be a failed head gasket.
