Update on my strange noise

Featured Replies

As some of you may or not be aware I have been hearing a strange noise when just rolling or crawling in traffic or pulling away/slowing down WITHOUT the brakes on.

So, I take it to the dealer as I had to pick up my second key that wasn't with the car on delivery. The guy who programmed the key knew nothing about the noise as it wasn't on the job sheet even though when I left the car I was told it was

I'm starting to get peed off so I scrounge a ciggy (I know  ) off Mr P and send him off with the bloke for a little drive so he can hear it.

Guess what? they came back 5 minutes later and couldn't hear it, but I suppose it's starting to get intermittent now. So, he says it's nothing serious but if it's annoying then bring it in. But that was the plan today  The annoying thing is, is that I keep getting told that Skoda's are notorious for noisy brakes but I'm not even applying the brakes when it's happening.

I give up.

Hopefully it will wear off. The infamous squealy brakes thing is usually when going backwards only.

I had a faint metallic sounding noise like a slight/ very low ringing sound - very difficult to describe - when coming off the throttle in my car over from the nearside front wheel area, I worried that it was the diff making this because sounds can be transferred (like a rear wheel bearing goone but sound like its a front one!) but apparently all vRS's do it from new. I got Winter's to check it out twice. I wondered if this might be what you could hear?

It never got worse in 8,500 miles and I got used to it. It's just that when you buy a brand new motor you expect it to be perfect - so know how you feel - just be patient. You could buy a Bentley and have a fault with it , you don't know yet whether yours is a fault - it might just be a characteristic of the car.

I think the vRS is a fantastic motor and don't get peed off with it just yet. I'm going to get another one I felt sick the day mine went. The fact that I see them every where I go on the Island doesn't help me either!

Take it to Winters, they were quite helpful with me even though I'd bought my car from the mainland (I'd offered 11k for their demonstrator on a Friday saying I'd be back Monday with the cash. They sold it on the Saturday!) When I used to ring up they always said to me 'oh your the guy who bought your car from the mainland' - what did they expect me to do!? It's in Winter's interest to have you service your car there and I was pleasantly surprised the first service was just

I had a faint metallic noise too from new! Just ignored it, if you take a car in for every strangish noise you'd be in the dealer's every single day. Good luck with your car, be patient, they're fantastic little cars!

lol my wheels, brakes whatever make all sorts of noises.

The rear brakes make a stoney grating noise when ya brake (not if ya brake heavy), 99% certain it's the pad compound but can't be arsed to change em.

When coming to a stop the rear brakes or suspension or something at the back makes a creaking sound.

and now i've changed my front brakes to the 312s they make a superbly loud squeal when brake very gentle at about 2 or 3 mph.

The last one no doubt will sort itself out as they bed in, the other two are probably just characteristics of the car.

OK guess wut? I've been having the same thing since i got my car.. mine is a 1.4 16v.. and the noise is like a clicking noise when accelerating at low speeds or lifting off without touching the breaks.. it appears when the car starts to move and slows down at low speeds..

i took it to Skoda, and they said that this problem is from the gearbox, they changed some parts inside that and the noise was still coming out.. then they told me that they changed some CV joint.. they told me that they changed many things but i dont trust wut they said coz in the end of 8 days i got the car and it was still making the same noise.. but it was verry hard to make it appear or her it.. i guess u dont have to worry about it... leave it like this for about 3 monthes and it'll become aweful :D then u can ask them to fix it lol

similar noise on my car last week but it turned out to be nothing more than a small stone that had got trapped in behind my wheel trim and was rolling about.....

I think the best way to describe it is like a bus's noisy screeching brakes, getting faster as the wheels move faster until it can't be heard any more due to either acceleration or stopping the car. But I have absolutely no idea what could be making it do it when I'm not even touching my brakes

I've decided denial is the best cure for this, so back up to full strength on the stereo for me

You could try a systematic approach to the problem...

On a clear bit of road or industrial estate, car park etc...

Drive off a couple of times to fix in your mind when the sound happens.

Next, try the same but aplly the handbrake progressively as you do so. Does the sound disappear?

Next, try the same but gently(!!!) with your left foot, apply the brakes. You're not trying to slow down, just try to make the noise disappear. Does the noise disappear?

Basically, you find out if the sound is related to the handbrake or the rest of the braking system...erm.. or not... :)

 guess what I'll be doing on my day off on friday, aswell as finding a shop that sells rock

aswell as finding a shop that sells rock
fanx :D:o:thumbup:

Useful (?) help is to get a female (younger the better) to accompany and listen for squeals. No joke their hearing is better at detecting higher frequencies. When a friend had a cracked brake pad - which made a noise when the brakes were not being used - I could not hear it, but the girls could and you couldn't ignore their shouts when they heard it. Made location of source much easier.

Have fun

The rock thats long and pink and sticky that you eat

Are you saying it's basically a squeal that occurs when driving but not using the brake, and that the noise goes away above a certain speed (say around 45mph+?) or if you start to brake?

If so sounds just like calliper squeal. If the copper slip/brake grease rubs off, or gets covered in crud it stops acting as a lubricant. As the wheel and disc turn it causes slight vibrations through the brake pads, which obviously sit in the callipers. Without copper slip you have metal on metal rubbing under pressure quickly, this causes squealing. The sound disapear when braking because the amount of pressure increase so the pads don't vibrate anymore.

Not knowing exactly what the sound er sounds like or exactly when it occurs I can't say whether that is it or not, but if it is simply removing the pads, cleaning off the crud and reapplying some copper slip will sort it.

This actually makes sense, the only thing that doesnt is that i wouldnt say i have to go over 45mph for it to disappear. It happens at crawling/rolling speed, I don't know whether the engine noise drowns it out after this

i will book it into my local dealers and suggest this theory,

Thankyou for giving me hope :) :)

Makes sense but they dont build the brakes with copper slip on any new Skoda.

Perhaps not although the 312mm brakes I got from the Audi TT had a small amount of copper slip on the edge of the carrier.

The fabia pads have anti squeal shims built onto the back of the pads, but they aren't perfect. If i remember correctly they have anti squeal shims on the carriers as well. They work fine but after it's all got covered in brake dust and clogged up the shims (mainly those on the carrier) don't work that brilliantly and you can get squeal.

Like I said without being there I couldn't say whether this is a likely cause or not, but it only takes 20 minutes to do and you'd know if it was or not afterwards.

Just trying to think of ideas.

That wasn't meant to be a defining speed or anything it's just that normally this type of squeal never occurs above sort of 45/50mph (but can stop at any speed below that as well).

Out of interest does it get worse or better if you turn left or right?

One last thing, is the noise constant, sqqqqquuuuuuueeeeeaaakkkkkkkkk etc, or is it more of a pulse, squeak squeak squeak squeak.

A constant squeal at low speed could possibly suggest something trapped inbetween a pad and disc (although I'd expect to see this as a gaudged (sp?) ring around the disk.

It's a pulse, almost like it's happening in a certain place because it happens faster as the wheels are going faster. If that makes sense :) I think it's the same rather than louder on lock.

Should this be happening on a brand new car?

how brand new? how many miles as it done?

I can't remember whether my brakes squealed when brand new or not but I know when I fitted a new set of pads the other month they did exactly the same, a pulsing squeal when driving, that went when braking or once I got over a certain speed. This disapeared as the pads bed in and settled properly in the carriers after a few hundred miles.

The car is 3 weeks old, and has done 500 miles

I really do appreciate you wracking your brains on this one

If you drive it at varying speed does it sound like a little mouse saying "should have bought the ford" ?

Don't think it is anything to worry about at all, it really does sound exactly like calliper squeal and a lot of cars get it at various stages and is quite common with new pads/disks. If it really ****es you off you could take it to the dealer but all they'll probably do is take off the pads make sure everythings clean and probably add some copper slip to the carriers. All things that can be done DIY.

"should have bought the ford"

lol even Ford brakes squeal, you should hear my mates Focus they squeal like mad when braking, even worse than my 312s at the minute and they nearly deafen me.
