Superb headlight whiskers

Featured Replies

So, my SportLine has xenon headlights that move when I steer. I have noticed that it has transparent ‘whiskers’ in the headlights but they don’t seem to lights up, is this normal?

Also, every now and then I get a big red warning in between the clocks (shows a car with three lines either side of the car and three above it. Been told it’s because there are cars around me, but every time it’s done it there has been nothing around me. The sensor at the front is clear, is this a fault?

The whiskers only come with the 'smart light assist' option, the all singing all dancing shadow technology ones not the simple light assist which simply switches between high/low beams.

i dont know the sportline spec but I doubt it gets the smart light assist as standard.

Only L&K gets smart light assist as standard.  And even that only after 2019 model year.

I’d be interesting to see how they light up the whiskers. They are translucent so light should shine through them. Probably more hassle than it’s worth but so many things are, yet we still do it!

Normal superb has black plastic "whiskers". So... Just check it out using strong light like flashlight.

that's wat i thought too - but when i shine a torch at it, at particular angles, it has a "cloudy plastic" look, and has a different color to the internal black headlight housing.
also, u can see the cutout from housing, allowing the whiskers to "rise" from the base - u'll notice it at the tips of the whiskers.

i'll see if i can take a pic of it.

They are clearly transparent on mine, they kind of glow through light scatter, but it’s not a definite glow as some have managed to capture. I’ll try the torch and see if that makes them light up.

Interesting :=) would love to see if it's simply transparent or actual material that makes light look like one

The headlamp assemblies are different types. I think recall correctly that the part number ending with a 'A' do not have the shadow tech or whiskers, part number ending in 'B' do have the full monty. I remember all this as my first S3 did not have SLA and after checking stuff out on here and with dealer it wasn't practical to change. (cost etc)

No doubt someone will be along to correct my memory, which is not what it once was :giggle:

Mine look just like that but only curve around corners, don’t do the full beam thing.

Here's mine.  You can see it's translucent, and it's separate to the black bit of headlights.

I currently have the "A" version of headlights.

I'll b retrofitting a set of "B" versions this Xmas holidays.

I'll also b experimenting with the LED controllers that come with the B version, by putting it on my existing As, to see if they get the whiskers going.

Actual SLA will require the hardware of B.

Pretty expensive retrofit, may I ask what for? Just the whiskers?
That sounds interesting. Please do post results =)!

can't b enabled just via VCDS - i tried.

i'm assuming there is something to with the LED controller under the headlight and/or the wiring harness.
