Budget brands - recommendations please.

Featured Replies

Hi all, I got given an ancient (but basically unused) British Eagle Mission 18 which I enjoyed this summer but its always breaking so I'm wanting to replace it.

Looking for a hybrid or road bike up to about £300 but with no bike shops nearby it's going to probably be an internet purchase.

Anybody care to recommend (or indeed steer me clear of) brands at my price point.

I've seen some Viking and Claud Butler bikes I like the look of already.

Have a look in Decathlon @ the B'Twin bikes. Free delivery.

or even Halfords.  Their 'own brand' stuff is now pretty good and any issues you know where they are and put the bike right back.

Darn, beat me to it

Triban 500 - comes in drops and flat bar variants.  Lots of good reviews.

Also seen some bargain prices from Marin, Python and Coyote. Any good?

I'm not so far from a Decathlon as it happens. I didn't know they stocked decent quality bikes, but I've not been in for 3 years maybe.

Marin the USA brand was good, i had frames and bikes from them 20 years ago, & my son raced one in Downhilling,

and i had Coyote Full Suspension but no idea if these are they same now.

Then the frame and suspension unit was £500.

Decathlon bikes are extremely good value for money & well worth looking at. I've had a couple (Forme 5 road bike with flat bars & a Triban 3 road bike with drop bars) both did around 4500-5000 miles per year & only needed routine servicing.  Would I buy another? Yes

Have alook at GO OUTDOORS , online site is good , bought myself a Forme  Hybred this year good quality and a very good price in the sale    https://formebikes.co.uk/

Get a Carrera Subway from Halfords. The spec is great, with hydraulic brakes, decent group set and finishing kit. The bike scored 4/5 by MBR. I’m happy with mine, just need some new treads as the Kenda tyres it came

with are sketchy in the wet.

I’d steer clear of ‘known’ brands as they kit they’ll come with sub-£300 will be made out of cheese.

Chain Reaction Cycles have a good range, vitus for example, but whether you can get one below £300 I don’t know.

Does it have to be new?

I had a limited budget when I bought my mountain bike a few months ago, same budget as you. But I wanted something a bit better than what I was used to (Halfords entry level bikes, all-steel, very heavy etc.).

I looked on Gumtree, and after weeding through the obviously stolen bikes I came across a bike (Voodoo). It was a 40 mile round trip, but the bike was mint, the guy selling it was a thoroughly nice chap and after riding cheap bikes all my life this one was a revelation.

It has a few scratches and signs of wear, but had obviously been well maintained, so I got an £800 bike for £300, plus a load of spares and £35 of mudguards...
