1.2 tsi bites me again, DTC P334B

Featured Replies

With 2 x 1.2tsi equipped cars in the fleet to look after, I thought I'd seen all the stock issues through, faulty timing chains/tensioners, ignition leads, ignition coil.

Today a new, serious, apparently known issue, P334B turbo actuator hardware fault, either faulty actuator, maybe sticking wastegate or something else. TPI's allegedly exist.

Tomorrow, the depressing phone around starts.

Along with recently discovered problems in my new (ish) Superb which probably wont be covered under warranty,

I'm just about done with Skoda and VAG.

Not being funny but if you own a fleet of any car or any brand, you will find faults. A branded fleet will likely keep showing the same fault so its odds-on! The more vehicles you maintain, the more headaches you will have. Get yourself a fleet of Fords and they will have common Ford issues. Go Citroen, again, you will have common Citroen faults.

You now have to think, "Will three Fords, three Citroens, etc, cause me more common faults then three Skoda's"?  "Will the faults cost more both in time and money on any of the marques"? "Will I get more pleasure driving the Ford/Citroen, etc then my Skud"?

Its then, you can make a genuine assessment of if you are done with the brand!

You can almost be sure the others will cost more initially, too!

Even the mighty 'Toyota' have common faults and will have higher price tags to boot (Or hatch).

If you are really worried, get a fleet of Kia's. At least most faults will be covered by their 7 year warranty. I am seriously thinking of making my next four wheeler a Kia.

£1333 for a new factory rebuild turbo and actuator supplied and fitted at Skoda dealer. Car restored to former glory with 2 year warranty.

Skoda tech said lots of coolant found on inlet side of turbo, possibly from water cooled bearing. I had not seen any significant coolant loss however and inspection of old turbo seemed in good condition though unable to check if the waste gate mech was seized as actuator was still attached . Waste gate and exhaust side turbo did look clean for the mileage.

Skoda did offer the option to change actuator only at £254 fitted but I wasn't willing to risk it being wasted money if the waste gate was jamming and the cause of the fault. In the end with the tech report, probably made the right call.

For information this part is the same as was changed (but this Czech supplier is a lot cheaper!)

I have a 1.2tsi and next Thursday having a factory remanufactured turbo by an independent vag specialist at a similar price. But he's offering a return of the surcharge on return of the old turbo. Do you know of an independent vag garage well enough to get and fit a turbo from TPS to let you have the surcharge back after returning the old one.

I tried a specialist independent first, their price was higher, and only one year warranty on labour, said parts are only available from TPS so those should have two years. So in the end I went to Skoda for the better price and warranty and assurance they have full Skoda diagnostic tool for adaptions required after fitting. Skoda would not let me keep the old turbo as it was priced as an exchange unit, the new turbo does look spanking new.

Book time to fit is only 2.5 hours apparently so most of the bill was for parts.

If the other car we have with a 1.2tsi ever goes the same way, I'll consider sourcing the turbo from the Czech company above and save a few hundred pounds.

Yup, skoda-parts.com saved my old Octavia I from being written off  - had to replace the whole of the rear drum assemblies as the back plates had rusted through. Main dealer cost was eye-watering and with all the parts needed & fitting the bill would have been 4 figures (hello scrapyard) - fully assembled backplates with all the bits - 67 Euros - result!!  Delivery was quick as well (lived another day!)
