New Octavia vRS - 5,000 Mile Report

Featured Replies

All is well with the ownership and touch wood no major problems to report. :)

POSITIVE POINTS:thumbup:

Have basically been covered before but just to reiterate that it is much more comfortable than the MkI especially when travelling with passengers as there is a lot more room. I love the seats, very supportive and hug you in all the right parts perhaps thats because I have a fat ar$e!. The stereo is significantly better and for my ears won't be changed, although it would be nice to add an i-pod at some stage. Performance is 'brisk' but not as fast as one might expect (nothing that a remap wont put right) in standard form and could be described as a little dissapointing but it pulls very well in all gears from 2,000rpm. Handling is exceptional and far superior to the previous vRS, inspires confidence entering corners at higher than normal speeds as it's poised and grips very well.

NEGATIVE POINTS:thumbdwn:

There is an annoying rattle which I think I have pinned down to the rear centre arm rest although not sure how to cure it!. Engine sound a little 'rough' at idle but I've been told this is a trait of the engine and the previous vRS suffered the same thing. Styling is a personal thing and it has grown on me more and more to the point where I keep on going outside to look at it, although I cant help thinking it needs lowering 25-40mm, even with 18" wheels it seems to sit quite high leaving too big a gap between tyre and wheel arch IMHO.

That's about it really and on a final note I recomend anyone thinking of getting one not to hesitate, it's a great car to live with and own and I love it to bits even taking in to account the minor foibles. The vRS is the best car I have owned by a country mile. :D :P

Rough idle wasn't a feature of my vRS mk. 1 In fact sometimes I thought the engine had stopped [which it never had!] Might be worth getting checked out at service time maybe?

Thanks very much for your very helpful comments.

Sounds good.5000 miles has come round bloomin quick!

Only rough noise on the Mk1 I find is the renowned 'bag of spanners' noise on start up.Apparantly the 1.8T trademark.

Glad everything else is good

Couple of things I forgot to add, both negative I'm affraid. :thumbdwn: Tyre noise is a bit intrusive but I put that down to the tyres which I will change to something different when the occassion arises and fuel consumption is frankly diabolical, my overall figure since owning the car is 23.1mpg although I do a lot of short journeys and have a leaden right foot. Did manage 30mpg on one trip but I didn't buy the car for it's economy!. Still stand by my summary though.

I get a strange sound when reversing and have clutch half out, especially when could. Its a rough noise, I was putting it maybe down to exhaust/engine noise. Have you noticed anything similiar ?

I agree with all makefish's comments -- the engine note is not the most inspiring and is a little noisey when started. I read in Autocar's review that it didnt have as good an intake sound as the GTi == that set me wondering, as its basically the same engine - why ??

I'm wondering if the air intake might be changed for a GTi one - similar to the wasy the fabia guys swap to a pd160 intake - when I get a minute I'll check the part numbers of the Golf and the A3 --- might have a simple mod available !!

In my first 400 miles I'm averaging 25 mpg, with a high of 29 mpg on a run last weekend -- that said the engine is still very tight and will improve I'm sure.

But without doubt this is the best car I have ever owned -- including the previous vRS that I had

Thanks for the thoughts and opinions so far guys - I get my new Octavia vRS next week.

In relation to the fuel economy and the thread I started here - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?t=49914 - what fuel have you been using to get those relatively low figures?

Actually after driving it this evening its more like a vibration through clutch pedal half way up than a noise :o

Can't say I've noticed anything, I reverse into my drive every night and into parking space at work every day.

Does this happen first time the car is moved - if so you may be feeling the ABS self test - although I'm not even sure they do that anymore..... Lummox ???

I'm also a new vRS MkII owner, and although I've only done about 2.200 miles (3.500 km) so far, I totally agree with Makefish report  . It's by far the best car I've owned so far, and I recommend it to pretty much everyone.

The power is always there, and there's no doubt it's a fast car, but I still just can't help wanting more :D . BSR in Sweden does a remap that will bring it up to 248 hp, which I think will fit the car nicely. I'm convinced the excellent chassis will have no problem handling the extra power.

When driven "normally" (as in not using the extra power), the fuel economy is said to be improved by approx 10%. This will be a nice bonus, if it's true in reality. I'll report on my expericence after march 30:th, when the remap is done.

I don't find the fuel economy all that bad though. When I'm on a long drive, I usually average 7,8-8,0 litres/100 km. (don't know the Mpg stuff), which is the same as the factory rates it (combined rating). This is not done by "driving like an old lady", but not like "a bat out of hell" either. Some quick accelerations and overtakes and a steady cruise at about 110-120 kph. Of course, if you have a lead foot, you can easily bring it up to about 10 litres/100 km, but that's still not more than my old Volvo (with only 134 hp) did in "old lady" mode.

I've had no problems at all with ratteling, and the build quality is pretty much as good as it gets IMO. Tyre and windnoise (at higher than legal speed) is noticable, especially on spiked winter tyres (I've not yet had the pleasure of driving on summer tyres), but not very annoying. I almost always have the stereo on, so I don't hear it anyway. I recommend the audience 6-cd changer (with Mp3 capability) and "soundsystem" option. It plays very nice and louder than my ears can take, without starting to "crack".

The only problem I've had so far, is the windscreen-wipers (I have the rainsensing kind) stopped working while on a long daytrip. They didn't work in manual mode either, completely dead. When I was done with my meeting (the car had been parked for about 1

I've noticed it a bit. Mainly when cold as its seems rougher :)

Btw I drove my old car tonight, wow;) . I bet theres not too many on here who can say that :D

I think that is worth getting checked out as I have not noticed anything like that with mine. The sound I'm experiencing is more like a tappet noise when idling.

Good to see that most are enjoying the car as much as I am  .

Would that tappet noise get more noticable when letting the clutch out half way ?

Not that I recall, but I will pay more attention to it tommorrow and report back.

They will sound a little noiser at idle as the petrol is injected directly the combustion process is harsher, bit more akin to a diesel.

I was looking at it today, it seems to be mostly noticable when reversing and you take foot off clutch then put back in to balance the revs when reversing. I was in with top service man today ;) ;) and he basically told me to :finger: and drive the car, and come back when its bedded in a bit

May as well add my tuppence worth :D

I agree with Makefish, a remap would be most useful, as the standard lump seems a bit lack lustre low down.

Rattle wise, my passenger seat belt buckle annoyingly taps against the b pillar. Highly irritating.

Engine at tickover - I enquired about this myself, and apparently, as Lummox says, partly due to the high pressure fuel injection system, but also something about a carbon particulate filter??

Anyway, apart from that, a lovely motor. Mpg I have been getting 12 mpg on my fave twisty road, and 33 mpg on a run at around the speed limit. About 20 ish around town with a lead foot.

I have no concerns about the chassis handling extra power, and look forward to someone taking the step of getting a remap. The tyres would be of concern tho, as with my Fabia, the Contact sport 2's seem unable to put the power down in anything other than dry conditions, although lateral grip is fair in most conditions.

I will be fitting something more suited once I have worn these out.

Brakes - I have found that unlike the Fabia, after a few good presses, they do start to suffer slightly, so once they are due for renewal, they will be replaced with tarox g88's.

Interestingly, I hear the Revo remap gives 260 at the flywheel, and 300 lb of torque. I also heard that fuel consumption seems unaffected, and top speed is around 160 mph, with 0-60 taking a smidge over 6 seconds. Sounds impressive.

Apparently, with a turbo back exhaust, high flow air filter element, and a Revo stage 2, around 300 bhp can be expected, which should give a top speed of 170 mph, and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds (ish).

Debadged and fettled = big surprise to others :D............. so I heard.

Thank you Dave! Good to know I'm not the only one. Happened to me around the same milage (well, about 2500 km), and has never happened since.

Just recalled that with my old OctyII 2.0 FSi, I had a problem with my left headlight. It would stop working, and the warninglight on the dash would come on. When I stopped the engine for a few minutes and started again, the ligths worked normally again. This happened a couple of times, but it wasn't as much of a problem as the wipers on the vRS II.

Lummox is right.

The noise people are hearing is basically a traight of DI engines. Personally I don't like it as its sounds like its drinking the devils water (diesel). When you tip in to the throttle it sounds like its knocking its head off - but isn't.

I took mine around some twisty backroads today and I was well impressed with the handling compared to Mk1, it gave you a lot more confidence coming into the bends.

btw what kind of MPG are you getting ? Does it get better with age ?

I've just completed 700 miles, and I'm still grinning

not really bothered about MPG - but it does seem to be improving, did run from Blackpool back home today at 80-90mph and returned 31mpg

Errrm, no! :thumbdwn: , managed to get 28.8mpg going to Weston meet but that was because I was following a rather sedate Fabia vRS (who will remain nameless :D ). Overall (since I got it) have averaged a rather less impressive 23.4mpg :thumbdwn: , but its been fun all the same :D:thumbup:

Hope you "sampled the goods".

Mpg wise, I drove to Weston at a leisurely Friday traffic kind of pace, and got 36 mpg.

Return journey was 3 figures all the way home, and got 26 mpg. Can't complain at all.
