Bang sound on accelerating hard!?

Featured Replies

Had my vRS 2015 automatic for about 2 months now and this is the first time I've notice this issue. Was about 5c outside and raining this morning had the gearbox in sport mode and accelerated away from a standing start at traffic lights, as I pulled away I was wheel spinning and the traction control light came on and I heard a loud bang sound come from the front off the car. I'm not sure what the bang sound was?, was it the traction control engaging or something else?

Sounds like wheel hop, as the tyre loses grip and the TC tries to get it back, you can get quite a harsh thud/bang that feels like the whole dash is about fall off.

You will be wanting better tyres, set at the right pressure and then still drive to the road conditions.

Or maybe if booting it put the Traction Control (ASR) off and you control things.

Or fit the Upgrades engine mounts that will be suggested.

Nothing to worry about, XDA jumped in to assist ASR. It must brake the wheel which gets all torque from the diff after it loses grip, so diff transfers the torque to the wheel which has the grip to accelerate the car.

Similar to the ABS knocking, but much louder. Be gentle to the throttle if the road tends to be slippery, or bumpy.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I thought it might be something like that, used to have a similar issue on my Civic Type R I had years ago but that wasn't as harsh as this and used to be rapid small thuds. So getting upgrade engine mounts would stop this issue?.

I'm thinking of getting it remapped to around 280bhp which will make the issue even more frequent lol

Did you wait for the car in front of you at the lights to get out of the way first?   ;)

The best solution to the problem would be adjusting how harsh you pull away to suit the conditions.

Check the engine roll restrictor bar which runs from either engine or gearbox backwards to the body.

To describe it more for us knuckleheads: its the sudden movement of the engine when the ecu drops the power/torque output to regain traction.  The engine and gearbox as a unit will be loaded up and then suddenly released.

Engine mounts will help but I think the roll restrictor (may or may not be the same as the dog bone mount) will be the best solution, especially if remapping.

Or Haldex :D

Yeah wheel hop, dogbone mount, better tyres & you'll restrict it considerably, turning the TC off & feeding the power in should completely eliminate it.

BTW 280bhp is pretty conservative remap

if you do upgrade engine mounts be prepared for some increase in noise/vibration/harshness especially when the car has just been started. it really does help eliminate wheelhop though

I had this really loud bang just recently trying to pull away briskly onto a wet roundabout. It's the crappy OE Bridgestones causing this as far as I'm concerned, they should be able to grip.

Check under the fuel filler flap. That's what I do.. Only had my car just over a month ago don't know these yet.

They aren't gonna kill you aka ditchfinders. But the non dry grip isn't what I'd expect. In the dry currently they are ok driving normally. I'm sure in the warm and dry months they'll be fine once warmed up properly. But that's not most of the year.

YES AWFUL, wheelspin heaven even if the road is dry. If you accelerate upto 145mph then the rubber grips a bit better with some heat in. To answer another question currently running my P Zero's (225/40R18) at 2.4BAR.:tongueout:
