crashed car. airbags gone

Featured Replies

hi I have crashed into a wall in my vrsthe damage is not too bad but my air bags have gone off. will i have to replace the whole dash or is there a way around this? also power steering has gone does anyone have any ideas about this. thanks

There's no way around it and you've probably broken the power steering pump. You should claim on your insurance, this will be expensive.

insurance will write it off, and charge you double on your premiums for next few years

find a breaker and repair it is the cheapest way.

If the airbags have gone off, there's more damage than you can see in the front end; I suspect an economic write-off.

I had a power steering pump fail when my car got hit on the left hand side, frontal area, along with the windscreen washer reservoir. No airbag deployment, though.  Expect around £300 with a code from Carparts4less. Plus a £250 surcharge, returnable with the old unit.

If you meant just the dash mounted air bag, they are a module and can be replaced, I believe. I am sure this is correct as they often get removed to replace the air con regulator/resistor thingy! Same with the steering wheel. I am assuming of course, when they blew, they did not damage the surface of the dash, etc.

Air bag modules are often sold on a well known auction site but be careful! Make sure you are happy with the type and that it has not been damaged.

I am guessing, though that you have bumper/wing damage too, along possibly with other underlying things. You might be opening up a can of worms so insurance may well be the best bet!

The dash one destroys the plastic on the dash when it goes off.

Oh, Bumpers! I didn't realise it was a MK!. In the MK.2, the air bag is a removable panel... Sorry! Must have looked up wrong forum!

^ Easy mistake :)

Don't forget that the seat belt pretensioners will have gone off as well, so the front belts would need replacing.

Also I think the airbag control unit which is bolted to the floor just in front of the centre console will need replacing once it has been triggered.

Yeah, you're right, why bother paying all that money and then claiming some of it back, just write it off and keep paying anyway. This is just such an irresponsible suggestion.

The point I'm trying to make is that the damage will be far more extensive than it appears. A full airbag deployment means lots of hidden damage and frankly the guy sounds clueless and will need professional help and I'm not happy helping him put it back on the road with minimal repairs which could result in serious injury or even death if he's in another accident.

going through insurance is the worst thing I could do. would be cheaper for me to buy a new vrs then to go through insurance and get this repaired. insurance prices are unreal for young drivers

You didn't say that and I'm not a mind reader, I therefore suggest you buy another one and sell that one for spares or repair.

Probably because young drivers are more likely to have accidents.

How did you manage to hit a wall with enough force to set off the airbags anyway?

That Vrs is dead, Airbags don't normally deploy at speeds below 30mph (not saying it don't happen,) so there will be Chassis damage of some kind.

Best thing to do is find another Vrs and sell that the good spare parts of that one.

Do you have an insurance black box fitted ? I ask as a nephew had a fairly minor slow  coming together with a ditch / tree and wrote off his car he decided not to claim just to buy another car. The insurance were very interested in why he was changing cars and he said they must have looked at the black box telemetry and wondered what happened.

hi guys I have nearly fixed the car now. new bumper new radiatiorr new intercooler chassis all sorted just need to change dash and steering wheel which I have parts for. other then that all that is left is ecu resets and power steering

You can't reset the airbag ECU, it sets a hard flag and has to be replaced and recoded.

it has been sent off to a professional airbag ecu reset company

Have you replaced the front seat belts? You can't reuse them once the pretensioners have fired.

weird trick I found out, if you pull the seat belt really hard the auto tensioners cancel and the belt goes back in. don't know if anyone knows that

I don't think they would work again though because I think there is a pyrotechnic thing in them that once fired is done. Not 100% sure though.

Yeah, just been reading about them. Once they've been ignited they are done.
