MPG question

Featured Replies

On a set of local trips anywhere in the 25-32 range depending on traffic.

On a mid range one 30-35 and a long trip such as Guildford to Taunton I can get around about the 40-45 mark once I get on the A331, M3 and A303. It drops off a bit around on the A358 into and out of the Taunton area, but it soon recovers once again out the other side of it once onto the B3224 and away towards Raleghs Cross.

Thanks for your replies above.  This seems more than I am getting. What tyre pressures are you all running?  Thanks again.

The one's shown in the fuel filler flap 2.7 bar (39.1 psi) all round.

Ok thanks I had mine at about 2.3 Bar, about 34 PSI I think I wil up it to 2.7 Bar .

Best I can seem to get with mine is about 45 to 47 mpg and that is being really frugal with the right pedal!

It's usually more important to be frugal with the middle pedal.

Correct if you can judge the distances and know a road well you can just let gravity and the friction of the tyres on the road do the work to lose/gain momentum and of course use the gearbox to your best advantage.

Must be the thinner, drier and warmer air there Hobbie and lack of warm up time cos doesn't seem to matter if I drive 3 miles or 300, always end up with 45mpg plus or minus a few! Happy wth that like and no doubt doing 60 on the motorway would get mid 50s but time not fuel economy is usually the enemy! Hasten to add I don't do crazy speeds at all but like to get up to speed believing this is actually good for the motor, once warmed up, and more fun!

I start work at 4am and my drive is about 36km.  Because Adelaide doesn't have a freeway that crosses the city, most of the driving is on surface roads.  I will sometimes have the A/C on because it can still be quite warm and humid even that early, but there's little traffic so I can time the lights and may only have to stop 4 or 5 times on the trip.  So a steady 60kph in 5th  for 45 mins gets me some really good numbers (note, I converted to UK mpg).

I typically finish work between 4pm and 6pm so then I'm driving in rush hour and the same trip takes 1 - 1.5 hours. Plus it's the day so I definitely have the A/C on.  So that scales my long term average back to the 55ish, meaning I'm probably getting closer to 45ish on the drive home.

Your traffic circumstances are probably very different from mine and that makes a huge difference.

Precisely why this WLTP thing is really a load of excrement.

Not really fair on excrement though.

Aye mate too right, reckon I could do 5 lots of traffic lights and a couple of roundabouts in the first 2-3 miles most trips and from towards freezing, by your standards anyway! Thing is on the motorway it's all basically the same but think that perhaps 65-75 actual mph is the flow of traffic speed generally here and my pal from Aus tells me your limits are lower and you have planes and stuff making sure people aren't speeding. He's not from the city like and I know it's a big place so probably depends where you look but if I did  60mph rather than say 70 indicated average on the motorway over a long journey, sure this makes circa 10 mpg difference. Over 300 miles that saves a fiver maybe so who cares, let's get there without being nuts!! If you do this daily then maybe it's an issue but for most in the uk, I doubt it and why didn't they buy a diesel anyway if they're doing those kind of miles??
