Is this an error

Featured Replies

Had my 2016 meteor grey vrs estate two weeks now ,but my insurance docs and breakdown cover docs are listing the car as a vrs 230 is this a mistake as i believe the 230 is a higher spec special version of the vrs

Yes, the 220 was the standard version & the 230 was originally a special edition introduced later (2017? i think).

More horsepower & slight better spec may mean that the insurance is slightly more expensive?

Can you post some pics of the car? it might make it easier for us to identify if it is a 230 or 220

Looks like an error with your insurance company. 230s had Xtreme 19" wheels and factory privacy glass at the rear amongst other things.

Only got this one at minute but i dont think its a 230 myself

Yeah i will have to let them know so they can put it right thank you

Looks like a 220 to me too, the MY16 230 had black pack, so from that picture we'd be able to see 19" wheels, black mirrors, tinted rear glass and it also had black exhausts

That's Black Pack Plus, Black pack was only Mirror Caps and Grille, plus Black painted roof rails if estate ;)

Would be worth checking the boot sticker as well, seeing what that says.

It's under the carpet and on the left of the spare wheel well.

Gives the engines power in KW

Right ille check that tommorow cheers

Don't you need to advise the VIN to the insurance company?
Surely they would know the exact model/spec, from the VIN..... if not, they just have to contact Skoda, to confirm the 220 or 230 model.

Other than that, the model numbering is deliberately very confusing.
The RS162 is 162kw the "220" model (I think 220HP)
The RS169 is the slightly higher rated 169kw model, also known as RS230 (or 230HP)
The RS181 (in keeping with the TRUE naming convention, but NOBODY knows this model as RS181), is the model everyone raves about which is commonly called the RS245.

The naming convention (I believe) was deliberately done this way, so people who were buying a traditional RS162 thought they were paying all that extra money for a MUCH higher output model, when they bought a RS230...... thinking it was nearly 40% higher output... when in reality, it's only 4% higher.
The same with the massive power difference of the "RS245" compared to the original RS162.... in reality, only a mild 11% increase, versus the 51% you "think" you're getting.

Clever marketing.... or deliberate false representation?
You decide.

My Vrs245 may have started with 181kw but quickly progressed to 229kw at stage 1 to end up with its present 256kw at stage 2. The only thing I could use the 245 nameplate for now would be it's power to weight at 1,370kg and 336bhp, which gives 245bhp per tonne. Clear as mud, plus 39% more power than standard and 40% extra torque at 380lb/ft or 517NM.:nerd:

When you insure the car all you give is the reg number no one ever asks for the vin

In the UK, no, you typically don't need to use the VIN for insurance.

Also, the marketing issue you describe is probably just an unhappy coincidence of the fact Australia use kW but most of their other markets use PS. So when they gave the 'special edition' 230PS and 245PS cars distinct model names it was presumably deemed less confusing worldwide for them to keep the same name rather than be known as a VRS 245 here but an RS 181 there.

Outside of Australia (and anywhere using kW) the naming convention has never implied anything more than a 10 or 15PS improvement.
