Hi all,

Just getting thoughts on whether I'm wrong or not!

I booked my 2014 VRS in to the main dealer, as it is billowing white vapour under acceleration, to the point where liquid is spraying from the exhaust and setting off the auto wipers of vehicles behind!

I'm concerned re head gasket, as I had a sudden coolant loss.

Anyway, two things;

1) Dealer wants to charge £119 for diagnostics even though under warranty- is this correct procedure for you think? They seemed vague when I asked if this was refundable if a warranty covered fault discovered.

2) He then advised that Skoda had no record of my extended warranty (paid for an extra 2 years at point of sale in 2014).

Any idea who to contact to sort it?

Do you have your original invoice?

 

Look out your paperwork, your payment records buying the vehicle 

& ask Skoda UK & the Warranty Provider what record they have or have not and do not let your agent / Dealership Employee tell you what someone supposedly tells them.

What do you think about the diagnostics fee, does it seem reasonable?

'Some' do say they need that Diagnostic money.  It might not be a Warranty Claim'.   Yours is, you get that money back,  they get their money. 

 

Talk with the Dealer Principle not just the Service Desk staff or Service Manager,.  & have the Warranty Manager there as well.

A local indie known for being ahead of their game was charging £99 + vat for a full diagnostics and check over of my Bora when I couldn't work out if my turbo/vnt was sticking/goosed.

 

As it's mechanical and you may be covered by warranty, it's worth it, as it's not as simple as just bunging a computer in it. 

It’s quite common under 3rd party warranties, less so under manufacturer warranty though.

Yes first registered keeper from new

I have the mySkoda app and the 5 year extended factory warranty is shown under the vehicle notes tab for SWMBOs Yeti.

 

When I had to claim due to an electrical fault when it was 3 years and 3 days old I had to point it out to the dealers who after a bit of ferreting about on the PC agreed, but that’s another story.

 

hope you get it sorted.

My Wife's Cooper S 3rd party warranty required me to pay diags supposedly but of the 4 times it went in for faults I only paid the garage once (and then claimed it back of the warranty company).  The other 3 times I didn't pay a penny.

 

Id like to think a Skoda extended warranty wouldn't require diag costs tbh

No, not at all, they're lying. If it's under warranty then they should charge nothing. Regardless of whether they find fault. They only time this may change is if they find a fault and prove it isn't covered under warranty e.g. because of tampering, neglect, damage, third party poor repair etc.

 

Find all your original paperwork from the point of sale and show it to them, proving you paid for the extra warranty. 

 

Depends how far you want to push it and how arsey they're being. You would 100% win if it's still under warranty and there's a fault, and you 100% shouldn't be paying diagnostic costs. That being said, if you really really can't be bothered maybe just go to a different dealer? Personally I'd challenge them over it though, although with their attitude, I personally wouldn't exactly be trusting that they'd do a thorough/adequate job of it and I'd go somewhere else anyway and never go back to them for anything. 

As an exteneded warranty most dealers i have worked at do charge an initial diagnostics charge, at point of booking nobody knows whether its a warrantable repair/fix.  Its not uncommon.  However if it turns out it is warranty, then the charge will be charged through warranty.   

As others say, first find your warranty paperwork or contact whoever the provider is. It maybe Skoda UK or more likely Skoda Finance if it was a Skoda new car extended warranty, or the dealer may have sold you their own or third party warranty which would have been very naughty of them

2 year warranty paid at point of sale with a new car needs to have been the 2 year extended warranty before First Registration.

If the car has a 5 year warranty from before First Registration that should be well documented.  A 2 year extension applied at the start of the 3 year Manufacturers Warranty would be an odd one.

All I've got is the original bill of sale which documents that I paid £400 odd quid for '2 year extended warranty'.

Interestingly, the My Skoda app states that I have 'extended guarantee - 5 years'.

Not sure who provided the warranty, though I assume Skoda...

Interestingly, opinion is split even on here with whether they can charge to investigate, the argument being that they don't know whether it is a warranty claim when it is brought in. 

Think you may be spot on in suggesting a different dealer!

If its shows on the MySkoda App it is an official Skoda full warranty. So they shouldn't charge you for diagnostics. See what Skoda UK have to say and show the dealer your app as proof.

I'm happy to challenge them and have contacted Skoda, but I can't find anywhere that states who should pay for diagnostics. If you know where it clarifies this is be very grateful if you could give me a pointer, as it seems very unclear.

There wont be anywhere which states wether they can charge or not. It will be that specific dealers processes.  The dealers i worked at we only charged if it was an extended warranty, (ie 3rd party)   but as i mentioned this is only to cover costs if it turns out not to be a warrantable repair, again due to soooo many exclusions. 

 

Your best best is to find a dealer which wont charge or keep challenging them.  But the dealer may stand their ground.  As i have mentioned at time of booking nobody knows whether it will be warrantable or not.  The dealer just wants assurance that if it isnt warrantable that they get paid for the time they have spent. 

 

Another thing which a lot of people may not realise is the pay structure that is in place for technicians in main dealers. They are pretty much all on bonus structure. Where i have worked they have to sell a minimum of 8hrs and they dont really make a good wage until they start selling hours over the minimum.

No. 

 Just about removing stuff in certain circumstances.   The Skoda Approved Extended Warranty by Car Care LTD had it all, but as said the Extended Warranties are different from 

the Extension of Manufacturers Warranties.

 

Always ask the 'Employees' at Dealerships to show you in writing where they get their cunning ideas, or to get someone that can, or get the Dealer Principal to.

The issue with on the job training is the training the person training them gets.
