Climatronic fan control

Featured Replies

Evening,

I just wondered, is there anyway to simply turn the fan on to min setting (1 bar) easily? On mine if I press the fan up speed (from off), it takes over and I have to let it go right up before I can bring it back down. Seems stupid to me and I hate it as I have to take my eyes off the road. Is that normal operation?

Cheers

Vijay

With the climatronic it is dependant on what temp it’s set on, if you have it on high temp the fans will come on high then slow down. I find it best to leave it set on 21deg C  and the fan comes on normally.

Cheers. I do have it set on max temp so will try lowering it.

Just went out and tried it. If the temp is on max and I turn the fan on (hitting the button once from off), it goes to the second from highest and stays there. If I set the temp to 21 and press the fan on, it goes to fan speed number 2.

Is it just me or is that a crap design? Never ever had this on any other car and I just can't understand why they wouldn't let someone decide what temp and speed settings they want :(

@Vijay2018 - Based on mine (late 2002 car with Climatronic) proceed like this:-

  1. Select Auto button. "AUTO" and a temperature should display in the RHS of the display.
  2. Use the buttons with the blue (down) and red (up) squares to set your desired temperature.
  3. Use the fan speed up and down buttons to get your desired speed. When you do this "AUTO" should disappear from the display screen.
  4. Note that if you select "Demist" mode, all other settings are changed to fan full, heat full, and screen and fascia vents until you cancel Demist.

but that will take over where the air flows (as in which vents) won't it?

I just don't understand how a system that doesn't give you control as you want it makes sense

@Vijay2018 - I can't see where you ask about output direction controls. And anyway I find that the direction control buttons and vent flaps (other than demist which over-rides everything except demand temperature when selected) don't change fan speed.

Mine does... sort of... Each individual direction has a different speed, and it remembers at what speed I last used it. If you select two or more directions, it averages the speeds out, but will also remember it if you alter this.

Read the manual.

It's designed for you to merely choose what temperature you want and then focus on driving, leave the car to worry about attaining and maintaining your chosen temp. Set and forget.

This is why the temperature buttons are closest to you, and the speed/direction settings require contorting around the gear stick.

Ah, mine tends to spend all its time in Auto or Defrost.

I can understand it doing that in auto mode, but if not in auto mode, surely it should give the user all control - that's what I've had in other cars so just found it odd in my Octavia

You still do have all control, if you want. I do it myself. It's still designed primarily as a Set & Forget system that you sort out before driving off, though.

It will just remember what you last set it to and go back to that when you switch it on the next time. I keep my hand blowers set to 3, usually, and it will return straight to that once I switch the Defrost mode off.

If you set it to HI or LO, it will be on maximum capacity heating or cooling... which means sounding like an F-14 about to launch off a carrier.

It's all in the manual.... have a read. Once you get what it's doing, it works great.

Climatronic:

"The Climatronic maintains a constant temperature fully automatically, once it has been set. This is achieved by automatically varying the temperature of the outflowing air, the blower stages and the air distribution. The system also takes into account bright sunlight which eliminates the need to alter the settings manually"

So it figures out how hot/cold, how fast, and where the air should be blown.

Like I said, Set & Forget.

"If you make a change before switching off the ignition, which differs from the automatic mode, the changed functions remain stored. Only the function “circulating air” is erased 20 minutes after switching off the ignition"

Again, from les manuel...

It makes sense it ramps up the fan speed,as it wants to attain the desired air temp throughout the car as quickly as possible.

My insignia aircon does the same thing... i have it set 19deg for 9months of the year and then low for the summer :D

I'm starting to wonder if my system is faulty cos I can't understand how anyone likes it :(

The scenario - cold winters morning and I've started on my journey. I don't want the heating on yet as the car hasn't warmed up. After a while I turn on the heating by pressing the "fan up speed" button once (the temp is on max) and the fan goes full pelt - but the car isn't warn enough yet so I get a rush of cold air. How is that a good system in winter :(

That may be part of your trouble; Mine stays on 18C (lowest available demand temp other than "LO") unless I'm cold on a long trip or have been soaked.

If the car isn't wam enough yet, why are you turning the heating on?

's like getting into a bath before the hot water has come through, no?

It's official, I hate the heating system!!! lol  With the recent weather, I found this system even worse. In the afternoon/early evening the weather has been warm so I want the air as cold as possible. I go to drive in the morning when it's only a couple of degrees, I go to turn on the heater by upping the temp and I get the fan come on full blast - WHY??????????????????????????????????????????  Also, why does it need to change the fan speed when I change the temp - arrrrrhhhhhhh

I find it dangerous to keep looking down at it too!

Why give you and automatic function and a semi automatic function - why not just give the driver total control????

@Vijay2018 - Try this:-

  1. Press "Auto" once.
  2. Using the red and white squares, set the right hand temperature to your preferred cabin temperature.
  3. Open all the fascia vents.
  4. Now leave everything alone unless you need the demist function (top left).

The poor car can't "magic up" hot air before the engine heats up, whatever buttons you press.

  • Author

You're missing the point though, I don't want it in auto! :(

I don't want it to magic hot air lol but I don't want it to turn the fan on full blast for either. Why can't it leave the fan speed up to me!

Easy peasy Japanesey! Follow my last, and then select the fan speed using the supplied fan speed up and down controls.

  • Author

yeah but that only works if you never turn it off or never change the air flow direction. As soon as you turn it back on or change which vent you want the airflow from, it changes the fan speed

So don't! It goes off with the ignition (yes really) and gives what most people consider to be a good distribution in auto. Or accept that it it can't do what you want and change your car.

so having cold air on a cold morning must be a good idea from Skoda.

Bit extreme to change it - just have to keep getting annoyed at it lol

UNTIL THE ENGINE IS WARM THERE IS NOWHERE TO GET WARM AIR FROM!!

  • Author

Think you missed my point, you said to keep the fan ON and for me that makes no sense on a cold morning when it is obviously gonna be cold air - not what anyone wants when it's cold!!

On a low fanspeed, aimed at your feet, for a few mins until the matrix heats up is how i do it... then send the air to the windscreen if i need to defog.

On doesnt mean flat out, but to a car max air flow to get the desired temp as quick as possible is a default
