Timing belt

Featured Replies

Hi all

cars coming up five years old so it’s timing belt time I’ve been told, (120,000 or five years which ever comes first)

ive been quoted £460 ( special offer apparently) for the job which is including Timing Belt Kit, Water Pump, Aux Belt and Coolent

I priced parts myself from Tps (Vw, Audi, Seat, Skoda parts dealer, not sure if all over the Uk) which came in at £345  so for £115 for doing the job I didn’t think was bad.

So as anybody had one fitted lately at a dealer or think the price is ok for a  2.0ltr 170 diesel ???

cheers all

Cheers for that

Need to do the same - Dec 2014, 35.5k miles / 4 years.

Asked friendly garage for a quote - but they said there is no point replacing water pump as mileage is too low and as it is "electric" - I'd have to pay for the "original" as "substitute" doesn't have - if I understood correctly - some kind of flow restrictor that is closed when engine is cold so pump is not moving water in the engine till the engine warms up.

Anyone can confirm ?

Water pumps have always, and annoyingly continue to be a potential weak point across a lot of VAG brands.

Remember, if a cambelt is removed, it can't go back on. So if the water pump develops a leak (it will at some point), just after you change the cambelt then it's another cambelt change to replace the waterpump.

This is why it is always recommended to replace the waterpump at the same time as the cambelt. There is no extra labour, only the cost of the pump.

Always use genuine parts, so ask your trusted garage to use "original" instead of "substitute" parts.

Did not know that the water pump was electric!

Diesel engines have a mechanical water pump fed via the cam belt - There is also an additional electric water pump (possibly post PD). The mechanical pump really should be changed at the same time as fitting a belt/tensioner kit as it's hardly any extra labour whilst every thing has been stripped down and if you don't they have a habit of failing shortly after, possibly because the new cam belt may be at a diferent tension compared to the previous one. It's also a good time to renew the antifreeze.

The petrol 1.4tsi EA111 has a cam chain and a mechanical water pump fed by a separate auxiliary belt. Likewise in addition there is an additional electric water pump (think this is to cool the turbo).

Re 1.8tsi and v6 - not sure

just had belts/pump/aux all done

£388 inc vat

My Mk 2 diesel 2.0 is coming up to 5 years old, 77,000 miles on the clock. I have had to top up coolant twice in the past month so suspect the water pump may be leaking a bit. Was quoted £490 by the local VAG independent (who are great by the way) for cam belt, water pump and all pulleys. They said the price of the "kit" had recently gone up. I looked at Skoda fixed pricing and that says £499 for the same thing. How did you get it for £388?

Get a quote from a local independent using genuine parts and then ask Skoda to price match...

Can anyone confirm when Skoda switched from 4 to 5 years for cambelt on 2.0 tdi 170  4x4 DSG ?

I’m looking into this as well. The garage in my village (not vag specialist) has quoted £395 for belt and water pump

Yes £499 is the fixed price for Skoda, they had a offer on at £460 but now back at £499

tried a couple of other Skoda dealers for comparison and all priced the same

Thank you, but I've queried again today with the mechanic and he checked his "Alldata" software - Auto Parts (?) - and he gets 4 years :(

Do you have a link to some official confirmation?

Edit:

OK :) I've just called local Skoda Dealer and they've confirmed that it is 5 years :)

Skoda UK are very cagey about cambelt intervals. They have been for years.

See here...

Dear Mr Renshaw,

I refer to our telephone conversation on 04 August 2014 regarding your ŠKODA Yeti.
I can confirm that our Technical Department has confirmed that the recommendation for changing your cam belt is at 140,000 miles
or 4 years, which ever comes the soonest.
As I explained during our telephone conversation, the recommendation is based on the date of registration. Your vehicle which
was registered May 2010, then the 4 year rule comes into place. Had your vehicle been built after September 2010, the
recommendation would have changed to 5 years.
I hope this information is of use to you. Thank you once again for contacting ŠKODA UK Customer Services.

Kind regards
